Kenmore 110.67732791 heating element stays on
« on: February 06, 2012, 03:28:53 PM »

When I open the door and the dryer stops turning heating element stays on. From researching other posts, it seems like I need another heating element. This dryer is approx 16 years old and I have replaced the heating element, rollers and belt once. I'm trying to decide if I should repair it again or purchase a new/reconditioned one from a sears outlet center. We are a family of 5 and the dryer gets used heavily.

The heating element is probably broken and shorted to ground inside the canister.
If the dryer is working fine otherwise you should just get a new element.

After posting, I figured I'd put a limit on this repair at $100. Anything over and I may think about a new dryer. With that said I pulled out the heating element to see if it was broken. I tested it for continuity and it is good. I also tested the high limit switch and it also was good. Not sure what to check next.

usally those clam shell heater short out to ground @ the top right hand side, where the element bends to the other side, if you bend element off bracket, you may get a year or two, re-installing back in. i have done it. O0

note: element will show good, due to shorted to ground but, not broken!

That's exactly what it is. The coil is touching the metal plate. Hopefully that was the only problem. I will reassemble it and see.

O0 , make sure you bend it enough where it will not extract with heat, & ground out again!

Got a similar problem here except I just installed a new element and have looked, tested and inspected all wires / connections for shorts to no avail. Dryer runs fine but heating element will not turn off if door opened or timer is in any position other than off or air dry? Is it possible to be the timer control unit? I did have a mishap with a short out when I forgot to unplug the unit before disconecting the feed to the high limit thermo whcih I also replaced as well as 250 the thermo?

Also on another note the motor temp breaker keeps kicking out shutting down the cycle. I have cleaned all the rollers and everything else as well but I suspect this may be related to the heater element staying on and overheating the cabinet interior space?

Just because the element is new doesn't make it good. Take it off and check for a broken insulator, it has happened to me on couple occasions.

Please do start a new topic and if you feel this topic is related to your problem post a link to it from your topic.

This topic belongs to someone else.

If we just had one topic for every dryer that did not heat or every refrigerator that did not cool things would get very confusing around here.

Thanks for understanding.

I did that and found no problems with the element grounding out. I put a meter to everything and got no reading to the frame cage.
