Kenmore Elite washer won't spin
« on: June 11, 2011, 04:41:21 PM »

This top load Kenmore Elite will fill with water and drain.  In the spin cycle it sounds like it's spining, but nothing is moving.  Any ideas where I should start?

Sounds like a classic case of a bad Motor Coupler.

This video will show you how to replace it.

Thx for the suggestion on the coupler.  I replaced the coupler and it did spin on the intial try, but after that nothing.  I took it all apart again and the coupler looks fine.   Should the inside drum spin freely by hand?  It does not.  Also, should I be able to spin the inside piece of the coupler easily?  I can not.   Any other suggestions to try?

Clarification - the inside coupler piece in the shaft spins counter clockwise easily, then turns easily clockwise until getting very tight after a couple of turns.

Did the old coupler look bad?

Maybe you have something caught between the tubs keeping it from spinning?

Run your hand around the top inside edge to see if you happen to feel anything caught between the tubs.

Put the machine in spin, close the lid or bypass the lid switch if you have the cabinet off and see if the coupler is spinning. If the motor won't turn take the pump off and try again. If the coupler is spinning, take the agitator off and see if the spin tube is spinning or if the transmission shaft is spinning inside the spin tube.

After further inspection, I put a wrench on the outer portion of the motor shaft (where the pump mounts) and turned the shaft clockwise, it turns the coupler and, what I'm assuming is transmission since I can see a drum-like piece turning above the trans.  However, the drum and agitator still don't spin.  I took off the top piece between the tubs and didn't see anything between the outer shell and the tub.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but how do I take off the agitator?  I notice that if I take off the top caqp there is a bolt in the center.  Is it as easy opf taking out the bolt?

Yep, that bolt, 7/16", is what holds the agitator to the transmission shaft. When you take it off you'll see a big nut holding the inner tub to the drive block. The drive block is locked to the spin tube with two tabs or ears.

The white connector under the console that you remove when taking off the cabinet is the lid switch. There are 3 wires and one is green. DO NOTconnect anything to this wire. Take a small piece of wire and connect the other two wires together by inserting one end of the small piece of wire into the connector so it makes contact and insert the other end into the connector on the other wire. NOT THE GREEN WIRE.

Thanks to the vidoe and the switch jump tip. I cansee that motor, pump, coupler and clutch are spinning.  After a minute or two I notice a slight burnt smell while looking under neither at the clutch spinning.  Does it sound like the clutch needs to be replaced?

It was a barely noticeable smell; perhaps it was just the smell some oil on a warm surface - kind of like oil burning off a hot motor block.
