Defrosting freezer - Please help!

The freezer on my whirpool refrigerator had a lot of ice built up inside.
I was trying to defrost it by chipping away at the ice with a knife. I poked a hole in one of the lines inside the top of the freezer. It made a hissing sound and now it does not work.

What should I do?

Wow, that is a lot of ice in there.

 Sounds like what you have done was poked a hole in the sealed system and the freon leaked out.
Time to look for a different refrigerator. About the only time it's worth doing a sealed system repair job is when the appliance is under warranty.

By the looks of the photo you posted I would say this is a smaller size refrigerator and something that is old enough that it's no longer in warranty, correct?

It would have been best to turn the refrigerator off and let the freezer defrost on it's own.

Just a little update. We got a new Whirlpool self defrosting refrigerator.
It's a little bigger and it's going to be soooooo nice to not have to defrost it anymore.

Yeah, we really need to upgrade our refrigerator to a self defrosting one someday.
