Brake pkg
« Reply #24 on: April 13, 2008, 04:56:50 AM »
What they are saying (without really saying) is that they also re-designed the brake rotor. I guess they want you to replace it as well for best results. They are implying that a new brake rotor will make it easier to install that c-clip.

It works just like it did before i started doing anything to it.  Spins out and leaves wet cloths sometimes.

I had to put an old thinner washer on it from the old bearing .The one that came with it was impossible to get on. It took 2 of us with a hammer with 3 screw drivers to pound it in there.

Just one note on the Performa (Atlantis too), if a load gets off balance, the tub will not spin but a couple of turns a second. There's an automatic braking response if the tub travels too far near the cabinet. Be sure you always use the HIgh water levels, even with smaller loads to avoid having the load bunch up on one side of the spin basket.

Also, check to see that your pump is discharging a full tub of water in under 70 seconds. If not, you have pump issues. To find out, fill the machine to a high water level, then switch the timer over to a spin cycle and time the discharge until the tub is empty.

Yeah, take it to the repair guy. He'll likely replace the pump. Or save yourself a few steps and go get the pump and install it.
It's part # 35-6780

This was helpful, but I have a tidbit to add.  I was having the same problem.  Maytag Performa PAV5000AWW.  Clothes sopping wet. Then I noticed it agitated but did not spin.  I finally tried replacing the thrust bearing kit, which went ok, but I also had a hard time getting that last, thin washer on before the final E-clip.  The adjustment indicator was just below "minimum".  I followed the advice here and got the washer on, but it made it WORSE--way below minimum.  So I tried the old, worn cam (I think--the white plastic piece that goes into the pulley right before the last washer and e clip).  I did not place any washer, and now the indicator is between min. and max. and lo and behold, it works!  Hallelujah.  I am a little worried about not having a washer, but hey, it works.

Glad ya could Get ER Done! That is a tough job for a novice. It is a trial and error thing to get that just right. If you have too many washers then the drum will not lock inplace for wash and the clothes will knot up. If you do not have enough then it won't spin. ya dun good!!!

Thanks.  I'm a novice, like you said, but are you sure it isn't the other way around?  It seemed I needed fewer washers for the brake to release.
