LG Dryer Noisy
«
on:

We purchased this LG
DLG9588WM
dryer along with LG Tromm
WM2496HWM
Washer around February I think of 2007. We have already replaced the washer due to the fact it could not get our clothes clean and kept finding sludge in agitator arms with balls on the inside even though we followed the tub clean recommendations. Now right after replacing the washer the Dryer started to make sounds like a pair shoes are in there. I really would love to replace the dryer too but can't really afford to right now. We also have what appears to be rust on the back part of the drum where the holes are. Is there an available service manual yet for this model?
Thank you,
Cindi

LG doesn't list this particular model on their website yet, but a similar model is, and the manual link is shown below. The mechanical similarities to your model should be identical. Sounds like you need a new drum. If yours has a stainless steel drium, it is warranted for life.

Thank you,
So the thumping could also be caused by the drum? Or is that separate from the rust issue? Thank you for the manual.

Hi Cindi;
The thumping is usually caused by a split seam in the drum, as they are rolled into a round shape, then tack-welded. The rust is just a secondary failure.

Where would the split occur can you see it with just top off or do have to remove front or back panel to see it?
Thank you so much for your help.

With the top off, rotate the drum by hand until the welded seam appears in view. Chances are it has a gap somewhere that causes the clunking sound as it passes over the rollers.

I do not see a visible gap in the seam. The sound appears to be coming from the front when I rotate the drum by hand. Could it be flat roller or something like that? Or could the felt be interfering with me seeing the gap?

Here is the actual service manual in case someone else needs it. It appears to be pretty much the same as the one you said would be.

Not sure if I posted it right.

Not just a flat roller a busted roller from the center out. I am going to try to get a pick of it to upload. I have never had these kind of problems with dryers in the past. This dryer is only 2 years old. ridiculous!

It happened very quickly actually started with a squeak sound and within a couple days the loud noise started. I noticed two front rollers so far is that correct? or is there a third? I can see one back one without taking the back off yet. The roller that went bad is the one in front just under the lint catch part of the drum. The other front roller seems intake. Would you recommend replacing all or just the bad one? Also found it odd that if not a third roller how is it in balance? Oh well I will learn more as I disassemble it. What was really strange is it started right after having a new washer installed I know just fluke. I am not liking LG products much at this point. Are Whirlpool dryers good if and when I decide to replace the LG?

Krazytech,
After looking at the service manual more closely looks like 2 front 2 back.
Thanks,

I like to change all rollers once I get it all apart . you have 2 in the back and 2 in the front. I would have a close look at the drum.. check it at the seam once you have it apart.. a little crack will get large once it gets hot so look real close...have seen split drum destroy many rollers...
with dryer all brand have there little problems...

Well I have already grown tired LG. We have already replaced LG TROMM washer. Looked pretty, but had way too many places for sludge to hide even when tub clean was used regularly.
As crazy as it sounds I went back to a agitator based washer because I wanted the pet hair off our clothes. Cabrio had a large one where I could still select water levels if I wanted to. So far very happy with it. We will be looking for a sale on Cabrio dryer soon. Thanks for your suggestion.

Not intentionally but please do explain?
Guessing you don't like Cabrio dryers? or washers?
What is your opinion on the best dryer? I remember when my dryers lasted at least 5 years before needing a repair.
Also any opinions on vent in door versus top? Seems like this dryer doesn't remove as much from the clothes as previous dryers did.
Thanks,
Cindi
