Maytag washer tub shakes violently
« on: July 29, 2009, 11:09:23 PM »

:-\ I have worked on a lot of these models but I never seen one do a dance like this. Is it the common "snubber" problem?

Depends....

the snubber should be free of any oil or grease. Inspect the area and report back.

Yes, it is free of oil and grease. It is very clean except for a white powdery substance, which I have heard this is a sign that the snubber is bad. Also, I have never changed on yet, is it very difficult or time consuming.
Thank you

If you've never changed one, then yes, it will be difficult and probably about and hour and 1/2 for you. The hoses (airlline too) have to be removed, the 6 springs removed holding the tub. (These should be replaced also since the worn snubber no doubt overstretched them by now). The whole tub/tranny and all will then lift out and you may turn it upside down so you can easily remove the brake assembly to install the new snubber. Oh yes, you'll need the $100 tool for the brake removal/install.

Got that?

6 new springs
1 snubber
1 Brake tool

This is just my opinion but the washer doesn't warrant the repairs required .At the best of times these machines were always shaking more than usual and I think they were dogs to work on ,they were designed to make a simple thing complicated . I have had snubber issues ,bearing issues , base issues ,brake squeals ,the list goes on ,they shake so bad at times the pressure tube pulls out of the outer tub . I would put my money into a maytag or whirlpool direct drive machine .What other washer out there is easier to service .

Thank you. If the tool is $100 and the part is $5 bucks (snubber) I think I will go ahead and dismantle it and check it out, but I am not gonna spend $100 dollars on a tool I will probably seldom use because whenever I get these maytags they are usually junk and I just part them out. Most of the time it is the transmission or tub bearing and/or seal that gives out. I would rather work on a Whirlpool anyday than these.
Thank you again for the replies/help.

I thought the snubber pad went under the base, what has removing the brake package got to do with that?

I thought it did to, but I have not even started taking it apart yet. I looked at the diagram and it looked like any easy tub pull, flip it upside down, uninstall, and install?

OK, I just flipped it on it's back and all you need is a flathead screwdriver to remove a little C-clip. You can see this in the picture I took. You also see the white plastic dust from the snubber disentigrating.

Ok, tub is out and I stand corrected. As you can see in the pics I took a special tool is required to remove the brake assembly because the snubber is sandwhiched beneath it. So much for an easy job.

And it only took 20 minutes to remove, take pics, edit pics and repost.

Ok, just found this page with instructions for snubber replacement, and no expensive to is required, just longer screws for the housing.

The brake removal tool is better than 6 screws. But yeah I have heard of that screw method.
