Humming noise from control board Electric range
« on: October 17, 2016, 01:59:00 PM »

We have a Westinghouse range (WFS204W) that look and work fine until yesterday.
The control board do a humming sound. Not to loud but enough to take a look.
Control panel seem clean and the sound come from the small "speaker" on it.
Can't find schematic for this board
Can't find replacement. Maybe to old (1994 ??)  ?

There is a big 1F 5.5V capacitor on it. Could it be capacitor leakage? Something like bad DC ?
Any suggestion ?
Board is PRESSENK Instrument 211708 with digital display.
Thanks

1f 5.5 volt cap is to hold memory in case of a power failure  i would suspect larger sized cap on corner of board   if top is slightly bulged or plastic sleeve shrinking change it

The green capacitor DOES look a little "pregnant" there.

Indeed it is lightly bombed on top. That why it's my first suspect!
And you saw that just by the photo?

OK. Here we are: replacement capacitors received and installed.
Control board put in place and
 :(
No change... Humming noise still there.
Have to try something else...
Any suggestion?
Test to do? Measurement to do?

I expect that the display board connects to a power/relay board. That is most likely where your problem is. I couldn't find a schematic or wiring diagram for your model. Would you like to post a picture of that?

Yes the display board is connected to a power/relay board. And everything look good on that.
Here are 2 pictures (not to good but enough for your eagle eyes!

F2 normally indicates an over-temp problem. Usually the oven sensor or sometimes the control board. Most, but not all, sensors measure approx 1100 ohms at room temperature. I'm not certain about yours since I can't find any service info on it. At any rate, the power supply filter could be the cause of your noise. A failed power supply filter capacitor can cause the the control board to do odd things as well. Try replacing the power supply filter capacitors first.

OK.
I'll change them to. But I can't work on this for a few days.
I'll give you results after change made.
Thanks for your fast reply.

OK here we are: it works !
1- Check the oven temp sensor: 1100 ohms ! Good!
2- Numbering and remove 17 wires from the board
3- Dismount the board and visual check
4- Find new capacitors
5- Unsolder the 2 capacitors. Check with ohmmeter: the larger one give a bad answer !
6- Put new capacitors in place
7- Put board in place. Plug the oven.
8- Enjoy ! No more humming sound, everything works fine !

Thanks Scrapiron! You're a master! :thanks:
