Here's a link to a video of my Maytag Centennial misbehaving:  Maytag Centennial in automatic diagnostic mode

I've replaced the actuator, the clutch and the belt, but the behavior is unchanged.  I'm running out of parts to replace...

...unless, I have to replace the actual gear case.  Could that be implicated - could be be responsible for the behavior I'm seeing?  The agitation appears to work fine, it's spinning the basket that fails.

Is there a way I can diagnose further, before I make that investment?

Nope - it's the drive hub!  P/N W10528947.

As was mentioned, it's likely the drive hub.  Make sure you run the restore default routine after you replace it.  the instructions are in the package with the part.

I have seen a fair number of this series washer where the splines on the gear case rust down and lead to repeated hub failure.  If the new hub strips out in a few months, you may be seeing that failure.

Thanks, Brad!  I've removed the bolt from the washplate, but the washplate doesn't want to come out.  Any tricks I can resort to here?

I start with a needle nose vice grip far additional purchase.  Just watch you don't tear up the edge the cap locks in to.  If that doesn't work, rubber mallet around the center area.  The Maytag impellers are usually plain nylon where the Whirlpool ones usually have a metal insert which can be especially challenging.  The impellers flex too much I've found to use a small pry bar under the edges.  I've also found it's easier with the top of the washer lifted up, you just have more room for mechanical advantage.  It's a patience game when they are stuck
