Kenmore gas dryer model 110.73912100
« on: November 12, 2021, 02:11:28 PM »

I was given the above gas dryer for possible repair as it would only growl when the start button was pushed. The units was very clean. I have worked on quite a few of these units over the years and the motor bearings are usually bound up such that the motor will not start a load of heavy wet clothes. I took the motor out of the unit ,cleaned it , and squirted  a lot of WD40 in the open end of the bearings  while turning the motor frame. After doing this for several minutes everything was put back together for testing.  A slight improvement was achieved but not as much as I would like. The motor is a 1/3 HP. Does anyone have a suggestion about a different brand or size  of motor for more starting torque as  compared to this original item ?

Fix the cause, not the symptom. WD40 is not a suitable lubricant, nor a repair. Either pull apart and properly clean and lubricate bearings or bushes, lubricate centrifugal start switch slide if it has one, check/replace the start capacitor if it has one, or replace motor with the correct one. Trying to find a higher torque motor adds problems when someone overloads a machine and the motor doesn't trip and it burns the belt creating a fire.

Replace the motor with OEM and stop chasing problems that will cost you time and effort in the end. Eventually it will catch up with you with either a Call back or disgruntled customer. Like my dad said with over 72 years of having his business that stays with me everyday ......"FIX IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME"!!! What are you gaining and why short cut it???

Thanks for the interesting and useful replies. I will probably replace it with a new motor. This unit does have a capacitor in the motor circuit.

I made a mistake in my previous entry. This unit does NOT have a capacitor in the motor circuit.

The motor was replaced with a newer motor . The old motor was scrapped since the bearings which are the cause of the bind cannot be relubed at least I dont know of a way to do so.
