LG dishwasher burning smell when in use.
« on: March 21, 2012, 09:29:36 AM »

Customer says that her LG dishwasher had a burning smell whenever she used it.  It was 5 years old.  Opened the door panel and found the control board was melting.  Determined that one of the connectors to the board had corroded and caused high amperage current to get over the corrosion melting the plastic.  Would've had to replace the board and wire harness but customer decided to replace the whole unit.

Something to look for.

Wow, it will be interesting to see if there is a consistency in this for the model.

From an LG dishwasher LDS5811.

It'll be fairly rare to see a melted/'damaged MAIN BOARD.

Models built after January 2006 have re-designed MAIN BOARDS (relay).

This type of failure also occurred on the following models:

LDF 7810
LDF7811

I have the LDS5811ST, also with the main control board burned at the same location, as well as the connectors on the wire harness. After working with the local LG service technician, replacing the damaged control board (under warranty) and wire harness, the dishwasher had new issues. Apparently, LG has re-designed the control board for this model dishwasher, since the replacement control board was definetely different (component layout) that the original one. Now, the unit will power on, drain all old existing water, fill with fresh water, and begin the wash cycle. However, when you open the door, it continues to run, spraying water everywhere. At first thought, the door switch was defective. However, the main fill valve cuts off when you open the door (sounds normal). Once it finishes the wash cycle (including opening the detergent door), it drains all the dirty water and appears to begin the Rinse cycle, as indicated on the control panel. However, a couple minutes into the rinse cycle, it stoped. I opened the door and discovered the sprayers would spin intermittantly, spraying a small amount of water as they turned (slowly). After contacting LG Customer Service and alleging we had received a defective replacement control board, another board was ordered and installed, which resulted in the exact same results.  Any thoughts ?

Thanks,
DMS89

Not sure about that problem.  I have seen it where the dishwasher continues running when the door opens.  I have notified tech support of this issue and they are apparently aware of this.  We will probably be seeing a service flash some time soon.  In the meantime, call LG customer service and tell them that you're still having a problem with the dishwasher after replacing the control board twice.  They may send a LG tech out to see what's going on and try to resolve the issue.

I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to add my experience: I have an LG dishwasher, model LDS5040ST, manufactured in 2014, and just had the same thing happen to me. Unit has worked fine for years, but I started noticing a faint burning smell. Didn't think much of it until recently when it became very strong. I thought a motor was burning up, so opened the unit and stuck my head in... smelled totally fine. Started looking around and noticed the smell was coming from the corner of the door where the control panel is, and that that corner was extremely hot. That's when I found this post and thought, "yup, this is what happened."

Luckily LG sent a repairman out and fixed it under warranty. I snapped a pic of the burnt piece. Hope this post continues to help people.
