Speed Queen gas dryer model AGM459L with s/n S654332202C
« on: June 03, 2020, 11:48:51 AM »

The above dryer was sold to a customer as a  used machine about 8 months ago. It was in proper operating condition at that time . A few days ago I rec'd a call that is was not producing heat. The customer was also a friend and I went to the house and quickly identified the problem in that the 2 prong solenoid coil was not working. I replaced the coil and it was once again producing heat . While I was observing the burner I noted that the flame was extending back from the normal tip almost to the gas valve. I dont consider this normal and not sure if this is something other techs have seen and I should change out the complete gas valve. Comments are invited.

Are you saying the "dragon's breath" burner flame was not being drawn up the flame duct and instead was flaming back towards to burner valve?  If so, you've got an air flow problem.  Either a duct in the dryer or vent is blocked or the blower wheel is loose or stripped thus not turning at full speed.

The customer called today to tell me this dryer finally quit working. I suspect it is a problem with the gas valve but I am suprised it took this long to develop into a problem. I sold it almost   9 months  ago. I will bring it back to my place and check it out for possible repair and publish the results.

I went to the customers location and found the problem was to my suprise the door switch. It was no longer working when the door was closed. It was replaced with a newer part and it was able to run properly. I checked the vent outside and found it was almost completely clogged. The customer was told to keep it clean or a serious problem could result.
