Refrigerator not cooling, 3-way valve?
« on: December 22, 2019, 08:41:43 AM »

Hello,

I have a Whirlpool refrigerator (WRV986FDEM01) not cooling in either compartment. The system is coming up on three years old and has never been opened and has all original parts. Here is what I have gathered.

Ambient: 68degF
Compressor: 134degF
Suction Line: 70degF
Discharge Line: 74degF
Condensor: 75degF
Capillary Lines at 3-way Valve 70degF

From what I gather it appears that the charge is intact and there is a restriction. I believe the restriction is the 3-way valve.

Per the wiring diagram for the valve it shows:
Terminal 1: B-
Terminal 2: A-
Terminal 3: +14v
Terminal 4: B+
Terminal 5: A+

The service manual says (P13) 3-Way Refrigerant valve, can not check the voltage output
I was of the understanding that it was a just a coil (constant voltage proportional to valve position)
Is this a PWM signal? I am assuming A is RC, B is FC and perhaps home is no signal (shut).

Am I overlooking something and do you know of a way to test the valve? Voltage signal or at least ohming out the coil?

Thanks

Doesn't sound like a restriction sounds more like a leak in the evaporator to me

Agree ...most likely leak in food EVAPORATOR..notorious...
Can check three way valve by going into DIAGNOSTIC mode..not to many times problem

Thank you for the replies, the only thing throwing me off with that is the compressor temp, wouldn't it be just above ambient if it is not doing work because of the leak?

Coil side of valve seemed ok, my results were:

Terminal 1(B-) to Terminal 4(B+)     96ohm
Terminal 2(A-) to Terminal 5(A+)     96ohm
Terminal 1(B-) to Terminal 3(+14v)    49ohm
Terminal 2(A-) to Terminal 3(+14v)    49ohm

Also commanding through diagnostic mode I could register dc voltage pulses so it must in fact be a PWM signal.
