Whirlpool duet gas dryer not heating Model WGD72HEdw0
« on: November 06, 2019, 03:30:22 PM »

I was given this gas dryer for repair and need assistance from readers to help find the problem of no heat . This unit is a electronic  control model with several buttons on the front panel that react properly when pushed and the drum turns well with no problems. I have dismantled it and cannot find the cause of the problem . All thermostats and the thermal fuse  test OK. Their is no code indicated on the display and I cant figure out how to get this unit into diagnostic mode. The glow stick/igniter turns on when viewed thru the peephole on the side but no gas flows .It glows for a few seconds and then turns off. The solenoid coil (a one piece item as compared to older design 2 piece coils ) shows a resistance reading as it should be for the 2 prong connector side but not a correct reading for the 3 prong side.. Will this 3 prong solenoid coil side not reading correctly make the gas valve not allow the gas valve to function properly.?  HELP .

Read continuity, open replace. I don't use resistance readings. Seems pretty straight forward it's the coils.

Thanks for your input. That is my thinking also. One thing about the new Duet  design is the difficulty of taking the front cover off just to get at the guts. The older design has a 2 piece cover. A real PITA with about a million screws to work on this new one.

I dismantled This dyer again with the intent of changing out the solenoid coils and/or the gas valve .These coils are a one piece type as compared to most older units which are 2 separate . They are held in place on top of the gas valve with several screws that are different in that they appear to be a Torx but have a small internal pilot stem. My Torx tools will not fit and am asking anyone with knowledge of these screws of where to get this kind of tool ? Help !!!

You will need to pickup some  "Torx Tamper Proof" bits for your tool kit.  Available at most tool outlets.

If in an emergency you can use a Drexel and grind a flat slit into the screws and then remove with flat head screw driver or Harbor Freight has a whole security bit kit for under $10. Or home improvement center tool department will have them.
