GE Top Load Washer noisy spin cycle
« on: January 21, 2019, 07:52:52 PM »

Hi,

I have a GE Washer Model # WHRE5550K2WW. Over time, the spin cycle has become very noisy, sounding like a freight train (kind of a roar). I have checked for nails/pins and other objects stuck in the inner basket. I can move the inner basket by hand and can hear a low-level grinding, which increases the faster I spin it.

Do I have a bad tub bearing? Anything else I can do to diagnose it?

Most likely the mode shifter part # Wh38x10017 Basically a transmission. Fairly easy to change. You'll probably see some discoloration from where the water has leaked down into and past the bearing. Mode shifter does come with a new tub seal. Instructions can be found on YouTube.

I ordered the mode shifter, along with tub bearing and washer. Taking the washer apart, I could see the seal had failed, causing the bearing on the mode shifter shaft to fail. Too bad they don't sell just the bearing itself! Replaced the tub bearing and washer as well since I already had the machine apart.

It now purrs like a kitten.

Thanks Haroldsappliance! I'm donating $20 to the site. I really appreciate your expertise :)
