Philco U13T16 Refirigerator not staying cold
« on: December 03, 2018, 12:41:20 PM »

Hello,
I have an old Philco refrigerator from the early '50's or late '40's.  A few weeks ago it froze water I had inside, then stopped getting cold.  I had new refrigerant added last week, frosted up, everything was fine, until it started freezing the liquids inside again.  I really like this fridge, and would rather keep it than throw it out.  Especially since I just paid money for the coolant.  Idea ideas what could be the problem?  It's getting power.  Is there a thermostat that could be broken, or the delay?  I live in Chicago, would also appreciate recommendations for repair companies.

Who put the refrigerant in? I would think it uses the old no longer made R12.
Sounds like the thermostat is bad might as well replace it they are usually inexpensive and something you could do yourself.
Did you check if the fan by the compressor is working and if the condenser coils are clean?

I hired a guy to put the refrigerant in.  Yes, it's whatever the substitute for the old freon is.  How do I get to the thermostat?  From the back, or is it behind the knob.  If it's behind the knob, I don't know how I will get to it.  Thank you for your help.

If you like to tinker with electronics you could try getting one of these digital temp controls. They are cheap but you have to mount the control outside of the fridge and then the temp sensor wire goes inside. The little box needs a 12v Dc power supply adapter then there is a switch terminal output that would turn the compressor off and on. Might be a fun experiment. The digital readout shows SV = set point temp you want in Celcius and PV = process variable which is the actual temp inside. So you can look at it and see if the PV=SV without opening the door.
