DE606 Maytag electric dryer
« on: November 30, 2018, 03:22:01 PM »

I was just given a Maytag electric dryer that must be about 30 to 40 years old. This model is a very unusual design. It turns the drum but no heat. I am probably not going to spend any time on it but am asking someone who has knowledge of this model where is the electric heating element located in the interior and how does a person access it ?

Halo heat on front of the dryer. Access is usually taking the cabinet loose from the frame and lifting the top. They were famous for burned wires on top of the element. Remove the screws on the back and the top will lift and slide forward, lift the top and you have access to the wires to the element. Serial number letters will tell the date made.

Thanks. I may take another look at it before I scrap it. Replacement Parts are rare as far as I can tell but I might be able to restring a wire type heating element. The data sheet shows it was made with a 4800 watt heater. Most of the current more modern units are 5400 watts of which I have a couple of the newer type that might be usable. The internal wiring is probably not adequate however. Any thoughts on this ?

The restring coil is still available, part # WPY311946.  I found a diamond ring in one of these dryers about 25 years ago!  Customer was VERY happy!

Yes the restring is still made but the felt seal around the door that keeps objects from falling on the element is not. I have customers that still have these dryers and they are made like a tank.

I attempted to  take this unit apart but all the 6 screws at the bottom of the cabinet were badly seized. As it is very difficult to get at the heating element I am going to scrap it.

I have now been given another unit of a similar design. It is a model DG406 which is a gas unit.. As noted on the other electric unit this is a very difficult model to dismantle. I was told it would not heat although it would turn the drum. Most of the parts are no longer available. The screws around the bottom of the outer housing were seized and even with an impact device would not budge, I am curious if anyone has been able to repair this very ancient unit. I would be  surprised that this unit ever sold at a decent price .

The problem on this unit was down in the front where the gas valve and ignitor were located making it very difficult to do any repair. I just scrapped it about an hour ago.

It must be the season for these really old units to be traded or scrapped . I was just given a model DE806 in pretty decent shape. It turns the drum and heats good. It does have a slight tick internally as the drum turns  .As I mentioned in an earlier message it is very difficult to dismantle. I hope someone can use it as it is since the housing is too difficult to dismantle. Maytag designers must have had a bad day when they put this on the market !!!

They were easy to work on when you figured out the shortcuts, especially since when I started 40 years ago they were a plenty. Still have my diagnostic board for the electronic controls.

I remember when I started, repairing 95% of the machines I worked on. And 80% repaired with parts off the truck. Now I am lucky to get 50% repair( Condemn a lot more now as they are the same cost to buy a machine as it was 35 years ago) Now with series numbers and more electronics and the cost of the electronics I see far more "no thanks I will buy a new one". I miss the "old days".

Yeah started in 1973 and the manufactures as you know kept the same design for years. Engineers seem to only play around with the physical look of the box affair and left the main design alone. Now it's like a new I Phone every year. Weird!

I still have my Maytag DG606 gas dryer and in the almost 40 years I've had it I've only had to replace the flame sensor because one of the post broke off probably because the plastic sensor was brittle.  I did go through some 2 sets of gas coils in the years I've had this.  I had the matching washer however I had to get rid of it some 10+ years ago after the transmission went "belly up" on me.  About 5 years ago when it started getting harder and harder to source parts for my DG606 gas dryer I lurked around eBay and when NOS (New old stock) gas coils were being sold I scarfed up a few pairs of them.  This 1979's vintage washer/dryer pair were built like brick outhouses....extremely reliable and easy to repair.

Thanks for the response. I prefer to work on/repair the newer model Maytags. If this older version was a little easier to dismantle I would give it a shot but I have recently scrapped 2 of these brick outhouse models !!!
