Solved my problem too!

Might want to advise people to make sure that if it has been leaking for a while to take off the front panel make sure that the insulation is not too funky. Mine, I laid it in in the sun for a bit, if i had some mildew suppressant I would have applied some.

appliancejunk.com has earned a spot in my favorites!

Hey everyone, Thanks so much. This was exactly my problem as well. 11 year old Whirlpool dish washing machine was leaking from the front. The vent was full of gunk and I would have never thought to look there on my own.

Thanks again!

Found this thread after disassembling my Kenmore (Whirlpool) dishwasher that was leaking from the door only during the wash cycle.  Checked the pump seal, the door seals, the washer arms, float operation, latch, machine level, amount of sudsing, missing parts, holes, etc... and it turns out it was like everyone said on this thread - the vent was plugged up with all sorts of gross greasy moldy crap.  Didn't even notice it until I popped off the grid cover.  Not sure how all that stuff got in there (maybe the renters don't scrape off the big chunks off food before loading), but removing the inner door and clearing it out with a butter knife and water seems to have done the trick, at least for a couple of test runs.

You guys rock!   O0

Fixed my Kenmore Ultra Wash III.

Another success story here: Sears Kenmore Ultra Wash III, leaking intermittently from beneath the front door and/or beneath bottom panel.

After following MANY false leads (checked float, cleaned gasket, cleaned spray arm, checked torx screws below spray arm), and thinking we'd got it once or twice (the intermittent leaking stopped temporarily), removing the decorative front panels finally made it clear that the leak was coming from somewhere in the neighborhood of the push buttons near the vent. Cardboard spacers were absorbing the water and making the leak intermittent--but the pattern of water damage to the cardboard made the path of the leak pretty clear, and the origin of the leak was also apparent when running the dishwasher with the spacers as well as the front panels removed.

On removing the vent cover (it just pulls off), I found that the vent was throughly clogged -- mostly with paper fibers from labels of glass jars that had been washed (against manufacturer's advice!).

Cleared the vent and all is well.

Just to clarify: it wasn't necessary to replace the vent cover. It came off without a problem and was easy to clean of the small amount of material that was adhering do the cover itself.  Most of the material causing the clog was, however, inside the vent and exposed when the cover was removed. It, too, was easy to clean out -- just a matter of a few minutes work; easily removed with fingers and then with cotton swabs for the last little bits of it.

Of course I mean it wasn't necessary TO REPLACE THE VENT COVER WITH A NEW ONE. After cleaning the old one and cleaning out the vent, the old vent cover snapped back into place with no problem.  In that sense (only), the vent cover was indeed "replaced".

Not to say you cannot just clean the vent ,but when you do service jobs and the vent is cheap and  the new one  just snaps in and the old one is some times cake with minerals i would just replace it Because you stock it.And would advise a customer to run the hot water sink tap to flash out the cold water before running Dishwasher before every use. Also use a dishwasher cleaner every month.GLISTEN DISHWASHER CLEANER I FIND IS ONE OF THE BEST.Poor it in soap cup ,shut the soap cup and run your longest cycle.Rinse aid is also very important in todays Dishwashers.

Our dishwasher has been leaking on and off for years now.  This morning was the last straw.  While my handy husband was trying to figure out where the leak was coming from, I started querying the internet and found this website.   The dishwasher is over 10 years old, so you know the vent had quite a buildup.  It was the vent!  We are no longer leaking  O0

This is an awesome sight.   Thank you so much! :thanks:

Same problem here.  Began right after using one of those dishwasher cleaner bottles.  Thought it ruined my dishwasher.  Must have broken up a bunch of crap in the vent.  Cleaned it out and the leak stopped.  Awesome.  Thanks everyone.

Other than removing the vent cover and cleaning the cover is there anything else to clean in there?  My dishwasher is leaking now and I'm thinking it could be this same issue.  Do i need to remove the inner door cover to clean adequately?  Model number DU915PSB0

You don't need to remove the inner door cover on your model, just the vent screen. Should be able to pop the vent screen out with a flat blade screwdriver.

There is a vent panel, unlabeled, at top of inside of dishwasher door.
Pry this off and you will probably find plugged with crud.
Clean, replace panel and you are good to go!

Usually takes years for this to cause leak from door.
Clearly, a "self-destruct" feature. (need an emoticon for Whirlpool corp. giving us the finger!)
A clever design feature that must have won a prize for the engineer who figured it out.
Else, why not a label on the panel:"Remove Panel and Clean Regularly" and a tab on the panel for easy opening?
