KUDS02FRSS2 - I can't figure out why it does not work
« on: May 23, 2016, 03:25:02 PM »

- While running a cycle, a loud noise was heard. I stopped the machine and looked for anything from something the racks hitting the lower spray arm. I could see no interference.

- I disassembled the unit down to exposing the inside of the chopper. There was a lot of garbage on the screen. I cleaned it off. I removed the little flapper valve from the grinder and the return circulation. No blockage (including down in the sump for the flapper). Removed and cleaned the flapper. Not dirty. Put it back in. No observable junk in any part of the exposed assemblies.

- I reassembled everything. The machine would go through a complete cycle, but it did not appear that any water was being emitted from the lower spray arm. I placed top and bottom spray arms in a specific position and ran a short cycle. I did this twice to eliminate the near zero probability that they had moved but returned to the exact starting position under Murphy's supervision. They did not move.

- I have disassembled and re-assembled what I did initially and have found no errors. Everything looks as I understand it should. I verified none of the arms or connecting conduits are blocked.

- There is no documentation inside the dishwasher. I see where it should be; but apparently the local vendor (no longer in business) removed it.

- I have just taken everything I originally removed and again ran a cycle. It ran. No objections from the machine. There appeared to have been water splashed around the interior. A bit hard to be sure in that I had inadvertently chosen a heated dry. I will repeat this to be sure.

- I have found many sources of information concerning diagnostics and error codes. Nothing I have found seems to correlate to my unit. I have at least four methods to enable various diagnostic functions. None seem to work as I understand they should. I have found posts on the internet, downloaded a file that was supposed to be correct for my unit, and purchased a "service" manual that had nothing on the actual troubleshooting. Nothing seems to correlate with what actually happens.

- As an unimportant side note: Why must they keep changing diagnostic command codes from unit to unit.

- Some of this can certainly be my not understanding what I should do and what should happen.

- This thing was working until I took it apart trying to find out what was making the noise.

- It will now run through a complete cycle (as far as I can determine), but it will not circulate water. I can not figure out a way to get any meaningful fault codes.

- My gut feeling is that the original noise was something getting into the main pump. It does not seem like this is possible. Whatever happened, it does not stop the wash cycle with an error code. It just does not seem to be circulating water. My wife is not amused. Think about that.

Sounds like it's not getting enough water. The dishwasher fills on a timed cycle. After the first fill cycle you should be able to open the door and check the water level. The water level should be just below the heating element, but not touching the element. If you do not have the correct water level I would check the drain hose to make sure it's higher then the water level in the dishwasher so it can't siphon the water out or simple drain out from gravity. If your drain hose is installed correctly the next thing I would check is the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve has a screen in it that maybe partially plugged causing a slower then normal water fill.

Thanks for responding.

The water fill level seems about right. A bit below the heating element. And it drains fine.

I have just not been able to get meaningful output from the diagnostic or error codes. I just can't get it to work. I would think the computer would know about this serious a problem. Maybe it does, but I have just not found the magic word.

One item I have seen while scrounging about the internet; diverters. From what I have read, failure there would correlate well as a reason for having water, but no pressure through the spray arms. Or the pump. The only way I can see at this point is to take the DW out of the counter and take these pieces apart. I would really prefer not having to do that if there is another way.

If it is the diverter, not a whole lot of money; but annoying. If the pump, more money and real annoying. The machine is around 10 - 12 years old. It does not get a lot of use (only two if us), and is in good physical condition. We have not had any problems. If you don't count the utterly idiotic use of soft plastic for the detergent dispenser latch to avoid a stainless part. And sell only the entire assembly. But at some point, if the defective component can be identified, there has to be a fix or replace decision. I really hate to scrap things that are working well. And replacing things because they "might" be the problem can get excessive.

Thoughts?
