I am doing a long distance fridge troubleshoot by phone. I was told that the compressor and fans in a KitchenAid KBFA20ERSS01 appear to be running, but that the temperatures displayed were 70 in the fridge and 61 in the freezer. I was also told that the back of the freezer compartment did not feel cold. 70 is about the ambient temperature in the area today.

If the defrost mechanism is defective frost would build up around the evaporator coil and air circulation would cease, but the back of the freezer wall should feel cold.

The 9 temperature difference between the fridge and the freezer compartments could be explained by the food in the freezer giving off the last of the cold (the problem was noticed yesterday).

This scenario has all the symptoms of a loss of coolant. The onset was sudden, not gradual. Could there be any other cause for such symptoms?

Thanks,
Jack

Double check that the compressor is running. You can usually hear it but also sjould be able to feel it vibrating.

If as you say that it is running with no cooling at all then it is a sealed system problem.
It could be a bad compressor, loss of freon, plugged orifice etc.
This will be an expensive repair as you need a pro. Often it makes more sense to put the dollars towards a new unit.

Check your warranty just in case the unit has a longer warranty on the sealed system.

Found the manual. Thanks. Got confirmation from owner that the Sears guy his wife called in said the coolant leaked out through some rusty fitting or another. Out of my hands. Thanks for the replies
