Kenmore 253.70313211 Refrigerator
« on: May 31, 2015, 04:37:39 PM »

Hi all,

New to the form and really hope someone can help me out.  I have a couple year old bottom freezer and I'm having major issues!  It is a Kenmore, model number 253.70313211.  There is some sort of senor or photocell that is in the ice making area.  It, along with a plastic clip coated in Styrofoam fell down and got caught up in the auger for the dispenser and tore the wires from the rubber end.  I really cant tell where it even was or goes.  Now I have an error code S of 5Y CF.  I am hoping that this is a readily available part and a simple fix as I'd like to not have to spend a ton of money to repair it.  hopefully this issue is actually causing the code and I don't have other issues to address as well.  Any help would be very appreciated.  Thank you in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply!  If I purchase a new ice maker, will this solve the code or has there most likely been a short that caused a board to fail as well?  Is there any tests I can do before I order the maker that will require additional parts?-ohm readings, jumpers etc.?  Or is it a replace first and hope it solves the issue and if the code persists, then perform tests?  Is this sensor available separately as a plug-an-play?  Thanks again for all your help!

I am assuming that it is the ice maker in the refrigerator section that your taking about and as far as if that seņor would cause other problems, that is possible as in the post i link you to.I found this video that goes even further on the ice maker that i will post along with a tech sheet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KsV-Zno92Fk&feature=em-share_video_user

Thank you.  I found and watched that video last night and removed just the ice maker.  I tried to run the refrigerator again and I'm still throwing the same SY CF code.  I ordered a new ice make this morning, as I needed that any way.  The tray was cracked as well.  I also ordered 2 new boards like the person did from the link you posed.  After removal, I unplugged the fridge and no change. both with the ice capabilities on and off.  I then unplugged the interface board in the hopes it would reset and still no change again with the ice both on and off.  I will replace the user interface board that is in the door and then if needed the main board in the rear of the icemaker motor area.  Hopefully that works...living out of a little dorm type fridge with a family of 5 is tough!  IF either of those don't do the trick, I'm not sure what the next steps will be.

Thanks for the data sheet.  If I'm reading it correctly, the code thrown is for the cube/crush solenoid.  I believe that is only a few months old as I had to change the entire flapper unit out.  I don't honestly remember if that was part of that assembly or not.  I will test the action of that solenoid and see if it activates.  If not, yet another part to replace on this thing.  Please correct me if I'm not reading he data info correctly.  Also, what exactly is "Test 11"?

Thats the Communication error like in the other post.Thats why he replace all those other parts beside the ice maker. We don,t know if in his case what fix it.I have a service manual you can download but it is close to your model but not exact but has some good information about the fresh food ice maker and that housing if you ever have to take it apart and what parts on that housing should be replaced.Just a note they do not make a Service manual for every model. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B-i5KqMA2RZwRHVxV3BHRU1WNHM/view?usp=sharing
P.S Some of those have a ice maker in freezer too.Must say fresh food ice maker is a piece of( S).

Excellent.  Thanks.  This whole unit is a POS!  Nice looking unit but total junk.  From the freezer door handle ripping off to the dispenser malfunctioning to this....now I see why it was so marked down at Sears.  Serves me right.  Should have done my research prior to purchasing and not after it broke.  Thanks again for all the help.  I really appreciate it and will report back with what happens once all the parts arrive and are installed.

Well the parts came yesterday.  I swapped out the ice maker tray assembly and hooked everything up.  Still threw the error code.  Before I swapped the user interface board, I wanted to check the crush/cube solenoid.  Dismantled the entire ice maker and removed the solenoid.  I wired an old extension cord to it and plugged it in.  Solenoid works.  By this time it was pretty late last night so I quit for the night.  I'll reassemble the icemaker assembly and swap out the UI board after work this afternoon.  I wanted to test the solenoid prior to opening the new board to make sure everything was good on that end.  I got that info from the data sheet.  I'll swap the board and report back.  Thanks for all the help.  Stay tuned.....

I replaced the UI board and I still have the error code.  I got frustrated and quit for the night.  I did order a main board with the other parts so I'll try that today after work.  If that doesn't work I'm at a loss.  I checked the wire harness for proper connections, lose and damaged wires etc.  Nothing was clearly evident.  If the main board doesn't solve the problem I guess I'll have to hire a professional or throw this thing to the curb and just get a new one....not a Kenmore and do my research this time.

dab147315 - I checked that other post you referred me to earlier.  You set up a Dropbox for a manual.  Is that the service manual?  Is there anyway I can get a copy of that.  I want to try the test #11 and I guess test #29 as stated in the service data sheet, but I don't know what that is or how to perform it.  I'm pretty mechanically inclined, but I'm not even sure I'm reading this chart correctly.

242115241 no longer available. when they change part number a lot of times its a redesign. User board is a good number.

I got it at Dapzz.com.  Typed in the part number in Google and they popped up.  Hope it's the right one.  I'll check to be sure when I get home and see if it's the new updated number.
