LG LDF6810ST Dishwasher whistling
« on: March 23, 2015, 08:02:36 PM »

LG LDF6810ST Dishwasher whistling/whining... more like a whistle than a whine.
Pump and motor assembly were replaced about a year ago due to "snoring" sound during wash cycle.
At that time I swapped the cutter blade on the new pump/motor with the original one from the existing pump/motor assembly to avoid the whine noise that's associated with the new style cutter blade.
It's been silent until now.

During a wash or rinse cycle it'll start whistling within a 20-30 seconds of starting up.

Any ideas/suggestions what to look for?

Try removing the CHOPPER---re-assemble the filter cover---and run an empty wash cycle (or 2 if needed) to determine if the noise returns.
If no noise---replace the chopper with a new one...

If still noisy...
Check all of the WIRES inside the door (remove door panel)
Inspect the wiring from the bottom of the door---up to the detergent dispenser housing
If any broken wires are found---repair as needed.
Wrap the entire wire harness (from bottom of door to dispenser) with electrical tape.
Place a small section of cardboard between the wire harness and the tar-like insulation on the door panel (keeps wires away from insulation).

What is the part number of the SUMP ASSY that was replaced?
Should be AJH31248604
If the part number was *different*---likely need to replace the WASH MOTOR...

If the CHOPPER and the SUMP ASSY are good & correct---the only possibility that remains---is a faulty Main Board (sticking motor relay).
Main Board failure for this symptom is fairly rare.

So I finally got around to working on this.  Motor is correct.  Wires were fine.  Wrapped them anyways.

Checked the chopper, it's the right one... but on the shaft of the chopper, there was some very long hair and something that looked like dental floss?

Cleaned up the shaft and machine is magically now back to silent!

 :D

Just thought I'd come back and provide a report on the solution as I find it quite annoying to never hear the end of a story.  ;D

Well... I spoke too soon  :(

Going to try running dishwasher without the chopper, even though it's the one that's not supposed to whistle.

It's usually a dry water seal

What is a "dry water seal"? Do you mean a seal that has dried out and is leaking?  Do you think a bit of silicone would be a good idea?  Not sure which seal would be leaking.  The only one that might be causing this problem would be the one listed on Page 51 of the LG LDF6810xx Service Manual shows a gasket in the parts list label M035

If you don't see a white lube around the shaft where the hair was, it's dry and squealing. If you can lube it go for it and same if you can change the chopper and that's the cause. I change the sump assembly

If the Chopper is worn/loose---a whine/whistle/rumbling noise can occur.

Well, interesting turn of events... I wasn't able to get to this for a while... and the whistling appears to now have cleared up on it's own.

I'll keep an ear on it and report back if I find something new...

Thanks to everyone for the help!
