GE Profile Frig - PFSS5NJWASS - Inverter or Motherboard?
« on: February 23, 2015, 06:36:03 PM »

My first GE Profile with an inverter board.  Not sure how to test inverter but the symptoms are that all lights, etc function but I get no compressor or condenser and evap fan.  Sounds like mobo to me.  Comments?

Also, anyone have a manual/tech sheet on this dude?

Thanks

Bob

Inverter only controls compressor. Make sure you have 120 Vac TO  the inverter. You can check for a low voltage DC to inverter.

Yes, I have 120VAC to inverter.

Mobo then, eh?

Possibly. If possible I'd make sure it's calling for cooling. Like thermistors. let's just say they are out of range, you wouldn't need cooling because they would say it's satisfied which would explain the no evap fan, cond fan, compresoor. Unlikely yes but I've seen crazier. You can check for low voltage to inverter from main after hard reset. Ohm out the compressor, check harness But yeah maybe that main......!

The frig is room temp with no food in it yet no call for cooling though temp controls say unit should be on.

Ohmed out comp and all appears to be good there.

Question - on the attached photo, you can see the inverter's 3-hole pigtail that attaches to the winding terminals on the compressor.  When installed and powered, can you check the terminals on the pigtail for voltage and if so, what am I looking for?

Thanks

I don't believe you can test it other than inputs. I believe it's pwm outputs that control the speeds.

Really? WOW! - Gee, GE, let's make things complicated, huh?   :(

Give me a simple start relay any day!

Think I'll start with the mobo and go from there.

Not totally against the main pcb thought.  . All inverters are the same, no matter the brand.

inverter compressor should ohm out all exactly the same on each pin to pin.
No way to to test power to the compressor.
If you have power to the compressor's inverter board and the unit is calling for cooling and the compressor isn't running you need a new inverter board.

Anyone have a tech sheet / service manual for this model?  The more info I have tomorrow the better.  Thanks for all the input, too!

Update:  Turns out the problem was BOTH inverter AND motherboard.  Board wasn't sending proper voltage to comp nor were fans running.  Inverter board apparently was also dead as no compressor.  Replaced mobo first.  Fans started working but no comp (waited about 5 minutes to confirm).  Added new inverter and comp kicked on.  The home is in an addition where there's some active building going on (but this home is at least 7 years old, as it its appliances) and I have to wonder about power hits.

Thanks to all who gave comments and sent relevant info - much appreciation!

if you have 120 volt at inverter and 5 volt DC at inverter board. you got bad inverter board.
