Fridge compressor and filter drier replacement
« on: December 07, 2014, 11:09:45 PM »

About to D.I.Y. a fridge compressor install. Got the replacement compressor kit (Embraco) and it came with a new filter drier. The replacement drier appears to be soldered shut. What is the best process to install it?  Fyi - I'm an auto tech and have experience with HVAC just not appliances. Any other advice is appreciated.  Thanks for the help!

If it's copper to iron joint like most,  best of luck they are tricky. They are a desiccant drier so they are sealed in one form or another, or it would be rendered useless

You should use a tubing cutter. If you've never done this before, I suggest watching a few YouTube videos.

I know the drier should be cut off. Have seen the videos but nobody talks about the drier install. Just see them brazing it in.

Even in the manual they don't talk about the soldered ends of the replacement drier. Thinking I need to melt solder then insert cap tube but other end to condenser seems like it is capped.

Yeah but it doesn't mention the sealed replacement drier. Just says install tubes into drier

So you cut the ends off the new drier? How much do you have to cut off?

The replacement dryers come with score marks, cut them there.

I see the score mark on the condenser side but not on the cap tube side. Guess I will try cutting it close to the end and see.
