Kitchenaid Side-by-Side Ice Maker Leaks from Dispenser
« on: October 04, 2014, 02:22:36 PM »

Thanks in advance for your help. Images are attached for reference.

Recently, we noticed that water is leaking from the door dispenser of our ice maker. The water looks to be coming from the space where the hinge for the ice maker lever meets the wall of the ice maker. We think that happens more on days we use the ice dispense. This leaking water is sneaking behind the water tray that catches run-off and dripping down the front of the door onto the floor.

My theory is that small bits of ice are melting inside of the ice holder and causing this run-off. Occasionally, small pieces of ice will also fall out of the dispenser. The ice inside of the plastic bucket in the freezer is not smooth; it looks like there is some frost build-up on the cubes (or maybe the ice melted and reformed?) Also, the ice that dispenses from the machine is usually in chunks even though we don't have "crushed" ice selected.

One other note: this seems to have started a month or two after we replaced the water filter for this refrigerator. I'm not sure if this matters, but I figured I'd mention it. Thanks!

Hmm. No, there is a gap between the flapper and the shoot. Any advice on how to fix this?

Look at those ice cubes that are frosted thats not normal.Looks like warm air is leaking into refrigerator from somewhere.Check all door gaskets.Lay on floor and make sure doors gaskets are sealing all around both refrigerator and freezer door.

Your cubes are too big. Likely your motor on the ice maker is running too slow, resulting in too long fill cycle. Replace ice maker and solve your problem

Thanks. After taking apart the dispenser, I see that the ice door kit is out of position. However, the ice door kit is not damaged. Instead, the plastic piece that is part of the housing of the dispenser and that holds the hinge pin for the ice door is broken. There is no easy way to repair this plastic piece and reattach it back onto the dispenser. I also checked several sites, including Sears and AppliancePartPros.com, and found that the part is not available to order. Here's the link; it's part #1 (the plastic housing for the dispenser.)

My short-term solution was to duct-tape the door in place, though this means we can't use the ice dispenser until we fix this. Any ideas are welcome!
