Kenmore 90 series clicking sound and lights flickering
« on: September 27, 2014, 06:06:57 PM »

I have a Kenmore 90 series washer that has been making a clicking sound from the bottom and when it does this our lights flicker. I thought maybe it was an agitator issue but I don't think that is it. I noticed that if I wash on Ultra Cycle it does it until gets to normal cycle and it stops and it goes through all the other cycles fine. Any ideas?

Sounds like a faulty cycle select switch (speed switch). Not making contact for high speed agitation causing the motor to cut on/off repeatedly.

So, I reread your post and I'm not sure what you mean by, when it gets to normal cycle it runs ok. Do you mean in rinse cycle it agitates without the clicking? If so, then it's more likely the timer and not the speed switch.

So there are different levels to clean Ultra Clean (14) down to 6. I would assume that means time it agitates before spin and rinse...? When I set it to Ultra, I get the issue. When i tried it at a 10, it was fine and had no issues.

Ok, in that case, the problem is the timer. Timer contact #19 is not closing if wash time is set above 10 minutes. This causes the motor to continuously start/stop. Once timer advances to the point that this contact closes, the motor will run continuously. This is caused by a worn cam in the timer.

BTW, any part purchased from APP can be returned if it doesn't fix the problem.

ok thank you so much! So just to clarify the clicking sound I'm hearing from the bottom of the washer is caused by the motor working overtime because the timer is faulty. So replacing the timer will stop the clicking  and lights flickering.

Well, the motor is not working overtime, it's cutting on/off repeatedly due to a failure of a timer contact. I believe this is the problem but I'm not there to 100% verify that. That's why I suggest buying the timer from APP as it can be returned if it doesn't fix the problem.

Could also be caused by low or med speed in motor being bad. Motor starts on high then centrif switch throughs over to which ever speed is selected. If low or med winding is open motor will slow, centrif switch resets and process starts all over again.

Motor runs fine when time gets to 10 minutes or less without user changing speed switch so winding is fine. Extremely rare for motor windings to fail anyway.

Don't just part change. Look at your wiring schematic and trace the circuit find the problem. Could be timer, motor or wiring. Easy enough to ohm your motor windings. Have you?

Problem only occurs with agitate time set above 10 minutes. Same motor winding, same wiring, only difference is position of timer cam.

Timer selects different speed in different parts of the cycle. Timer could be bad, just suggesting to actually check it instead of making an expensive guess

On this model, agitation speed is not selected or changed at any time in the cycle by the timer. It is by user controlled speed select switch only. Check the wiring diagram as I have. This is not just a guess on my part. The typical diy'er is not going to be able to confirm 100% as they do not have the knowledge and experience in electrical troubleshooting techniques necessary to do that.
