Several Years ago I approached the administrator of a vocational school. I had a grand idea - not a 3 week course but a 6 month to 2 year program that would include commercial , residential and industrial laundrys, commercial restuarant equipment repair, etc. Same sort of detail as a HVAC school does (I went to a 3 year school for that in the 70's). Let's face it, what the hell can you learn in a short 3 week course and make it stick to their minds. Future techs need hands on. - I used to train techs. Repetition, Repetition, Repetition, is what is needed. Bring in actual machinery to work on.
My thought - include all manufacturers and have them come in and teach their products - the draw for them - trained, knowledgeable techs coming right out of the school. Teach detailed instruction on electronic and electrical diagnosis, how to expertly read scematics, etc. A Dream idea .................until I got a dose of cold water. To set up the grant program, financial aid, other bullshit. Detailed Cirriculum would have to be drawn up. By the time she got done talking to me, I gave up. That's how much work it would be just to get it going.
I still think this is a great idea................. But impossible to implement.
