Kenmore Elite Refrigerator - freezer not defrosting
« on: July 28, 2013, 09:01:05 AM »

Hi - I have a Kenmore Elite unit Model No: 106.72206201 which has not been defrosting, thus the freezer coils ice over and then the unit does not stay cool.  (I had a sears technician visit who checked the round "thermostat" and told me it was "good" - He then told me that the problem was the "Defrost Timer" and he would also recommend replacing the "defrost control board".)  In reviewing this unit online, and in the repair parts list, it appears that this unit doesn't have a "defrost time" and all defrost functions are handled by the control board.  I have replaced the "Adaptive Defrost control board" (Part No; 2213493) and the system still is not working properly and continues to ice up.

1.  any thoughts on what steps to take next to identify problem and fix - What other parts I can replace to fix the problem?

2.  Is there a way to "manually" activate the unit to get it to defrost itself?

Any advice you can give is welcome and greatly appreciated...   (I am not an engineer or technician... so "checking Ohms or current is a problem for me... sorry)

Thanks for your help.

Sounds like the sears guy was a waste of your money. Are you sure he properly tested the defrost thermostat and the defrost heater? The round thermostats are a common failure and they are cheap. You need to find someone who can test these components for you.
