Whirlpool Range Surface Element not Working
« on: June 04, 2008, 11:06:40 PM »

Model Number: RF315PXKQ0 icon, The left front element on this range would no longer heat for the customer but the others continued to work fine so I knew the source voltage was good. I did a quick voltage check at the element receptacle and found no voltage present which lead me to the back of the control panel where I could access the element infinite switch. Each element is controlled by a switch which will turn the voltage on and off using an internal bi-metal thermostat. So when you set the switch to medium heat, current will flow through the switch to the element causing the element to heat along with the internal bi-metal. Once the temperature reaches the set temperature, the bi-metal contacts will open cutting power to the element. When it cools back down, the switch will turn the element back on. These switches are often referred to as infinite because they can turn the element on and off or anywhere in between. I did a quick voltage check at the switch and found voltage going in, but nothing coming out so this range needs a replacement switch. Installed a new infinite switch and now this element heats again.
