WTW5500XW2 not spinning lid locked
« on: December 19, 2012, 08:44:34 AM »

Any info. on this washer would help. It makes a clicking noise but will not spin. It does all the other cycles, but the lid stays locked.

So, it fills, agitates, drains but won't spin? And lid remains locked at end of cycle? These new VMW designs are a piece of crap. Problems problems problems.... If the lid lock will not unlock, you have two options. Force it open, which breaks part of the mechanism (designed to do this), requiring a new lid lock. The other option I don't recommend unless you are experienced with servicing electrical/electronic components. You have to unplug the switch from the control unit and very briefly apply 120vac across the yel and wht wires.

It makes a clicking noise but will not spin.

I would take a look at the splutch, part # W10315818

Any info. on this washer would help.

Where is the clicking noise? Behind the control panel or underneath the washer? One problem with these washers is the nut on the drive pulley loosens which drops the pulley low enough that the basket drive on the splutch does not engage the pulley preventing spin. This also usually causes the belt and/or pulley to contact the belt guard making a scraping noise. The shifter is also a high failure item. This shifts between spin/agitate and has a sensor for detecting spin speed. Don't know how this would correlate with the lid lock though. Have you tried unplugging the washer for a minute or so and re-plugging to see if it will unlock?

Or you could put it into diagnostics and see what error codes are there . This unit makes a clicking noise when it shifts and engages the splutch. I agree with AJ find out why it is not engaging.

What part of the splutch failed? Not much to go wrong there other than stripping of the teeth on the slider. Interesting to note that lack of spin causes the lid lock to remain locked.

Ok this is what he did, and this is his 3rd repair on these washers and it seems to fix.
What he found is the nut on the bottom of the splutch kit becomes loose and splutch falls down causing it not to spin.
So what he does is replace the pulley, belt, and the nut. These parts become stripped.
The splutch kit does not include the belt and the nut so he is buying that seperate.
P/N W10006384-belt
P/N W10163336-nut
Also, to get the lid to unlock he unplugs the washer for 3 mins and it will unlock.
Hope this helps

Ok, great, that's what I suggested before. This is not a splutch problem. The splutch (splined clutch) is the part above the pulley attached to the gearcase. The pulley is known as a splutch pulley, but it is not the splutch. This loose nut is a known problem by Whirlpool. They put out a service notice advising that the nut and pulley be replaced and threadlock added before replacing the nut. It is generally not neccessary to replace the pulley or the nut. Just put some blue 242 loctite on the input shaft threads and retighten the nut. I assume after unplugging the washer for 3 minutes that he plugs it back in to unlock the lid lock. The lid lock will not unlock on it's own. It requires power to unlock it as well as to lock it. It has a latching mechanism that maintains position (locked/unlocked). Only a brief pulse of power is used to lock/unlock it. Once locked or unlocked, it stays that way until another pulse of power is applied.

The service notice says to use Loctite threadlocker blue 242. Commonly available at most hardware stores. It also recommends running the calibration function in diagnostic mode to recalibrate the washer.

Not sure if there is a Whirlpool part number or not, but you can just get it at the hardware store.

Nothing to be sorry about, I appreciate you posting, thanks.
