Whirlpool Refrigerator Not Cooling
« on: May 05, 2008, 10:33:31 PM »

Model Number: ET8MHKXMQ04 icon, this was a new refrigerator and it never cooled for the customer since delivery. After a quick look, I could hear the familiar hum then click sounds associated with a compressor not able to start. Compressor motors require a start device to energize the start winding in order to get the compressor running from a cold start, and this device also contains a thermal overload that will open the electrical circuit (with an audible click) if the compressor doesn't start. The start device was trying to start the compressor (that's the humming sound) and then the overload would open (that's the click) until it cooled back down and the cycle would continue. I removed the starter from the compressor and checked the motor windings with my meter, only to find the start winding was reading as an open circuit. So the result was this unit needed a new compressor to start working again. I realize this isn't a do-it-yourself repair, but I hope interesting none the less.
