Hi AJ,

Thanks for the invite, I just noticed it. I've been a pro tech since 1972, having gone through GM's Frigidaire training back then. 'Have had my own appliance repair business, Dave's Repair Service, since '86 here in N PA's beautiful 'Endless Mountains' area. Diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease 2 years ago, I had to shut down the in-home service side of the biz last summer.

These days, I rework a LOT of vintage Sunbeam Mixmasters and Sunbeam auto toasters(!) here in the shop - the same equipt my Dad serviced when it was new, back in the 50's and 60's!  :)

Anyway, sign me up. I still learn something new every day, and may be able to help another tech along the way.

Thanks again, and God bless,

I own my own appliance service business here in Louisiana and I have also worked for SEARS as an appliance service technician. I would appreciate it if you would add me to your Let's Talk Service board. This site is the best service site on the net and I have enjoyed being a member here. I am always learning something from other techs and perhaps I can help others also.
Thanks,

Hi i am a new member. I am considering taking a coarse and becoming certified(?) I've always had a knack for this kind of thing, taking things apart and putting things back together, fixing things, installing.. ect. but i have a few questions/reservations about the whole thing. Is there any truth to the whole women in the industry thing? do people prefer men? would i be shunned? Is there even any room left for me in this kind of field, or would people just rather buy new? any experiences or comments would be appreciated.

norimw there is room for women in any field to learn and excel.
Kellonie on this forum has her own repair business in North Carolina and is doing very well.
No one knows it all except maybe REG US PAT_OFF and REPAIRMAN and they have been wrong on occasion.
My advice to you is DO IT.

hey thanks guys i really appreciate the support! but what about the other part of my post repair vs replace? what has been your experience. i know people would just rather replace something like a tv or even a refrigerator because there is always something newer and more hi-tec. but what about other things?

When it comes to these newer electronically controlled appliances Buyer Beware!
You had best invest in keeping the old machines going. My opinion.

It is a male dominated profesion but that's only because there are not more women in it ???  ...if that makes sense.  So go for it male female doesn't make a difference and you will be in a ton of homes and alot of the time it's the mom/wife who will be there and I'll bet ya they will be more comfortable with a woman than a man (opinion via my lovely girl) O0
Repair/replace...I'm fairly new in the bus. so take it as a rookie's opinion; I have set my service call rate low comparably (not lowest) $50 which includes diagnosis and flat rate fee for repair.  If they choose to repair the service call is included with flat rate not in addition.  This price helps me generate a customer base as well as high enough to weed out and get people who are serious about wanting the repair yet low enough to take it to find out what is wrong and make the decision.
That being said, you will find the more you learn most of the time you will have a pretty good idea of what is wrong before you even go out.  There has been times I will tell the customer what I think it is and it will be pricey if that is the prob. only once out of a dozen or so times have they decided not to have me out and some decided to not repair and just paid the service call.
There are folks on this forum with a ton of experience and can give you a much better outlook than I but that is my rookie point of view...for what it's worth :P

Do repairs. Not everyone can afford new just because something minor broke.
Rule of thumb for repair is,if it can be repaired for 50% of the cost of new it should be repaired.

In regards to Whirlpool Tech's statement.  Yes they are the same company.   In my area one Women Drives a sears service van, and the other drives a A & E van.

I personally do between 9 and 11 calls each and every day that i work.  I could do more if there were enough hours in a day.  There is plenty of Service work to be done out there.   The company I work for hired 2 new techs last year, and 2 already this year. We are a very lucky company, because the area we live in holds almost 1 million people in our service area.   Here's where I live  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehigh_Valley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lehigh_Valley)

Great line of work to be in, You will be in demand.   Check this out at the United States Department of labor:  http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos193.htm#outlook (http://www.bls.gov/oco/ocos193.htm#outlook) O0

@rego where/how did you get your training? somebody said they took an online coarse ICS Appliance Repair i think it was you but im not sure. if so what did you think of it? the penn foster coarse im looking at says you can finish in as little as four months i dont know how true that is, but it would be nice.

Post by: rego on January 17, 2012, 04:50:53 AM
It's been a couple years since I researched school's but this is what I did: I saw the penn foster and other's that took you from nothing to entry tech.  I already had a degree in marine technology so already had all the electric theory (definately know your electric!), motor's, etc. so ended up taking uncle harry's course.  I spent about 3 month's going through his program as well as working with a local company for a couple year's doing service calls on water heater's and pool and spa's before going out on my own.  No need to take the couple year's just threw it out there so you know my background it did help me with troubleshooting skills as well as how a service business run's.  Uncle Harry's is a decent course but when I took it it was out of date.  A lot of good basic knowlege which let me know what direction I needed to learn more.  After his course ended up on multiple forums constantly reading post's and researching what didn't make sense.  This site is fantastic!  Not only do the tech.'s talk you through thing's but the sharing of manual's is incredible.  You can get through anything with the right manual and common sense.  There are theory and education manuals as well as service.  If I had it to do over again I think I would read all the education manuals on here, watch all the video's I could get ahold of, head down to local book store and see what they have, and finally poke my nose around the local appliance part's shop and talk to the folks there see what they've got and there thought's (may get lucky with a local class).  I don't believe I would have ended up spending all the money on uncle harry's if I did this but he has a pretty good program that discusses all aspect's of the business and maybe he has updated his stuff...I wasn't all that impressed with it but it did get me started.  Start reading and grab some free machines and tear em apart and never be afraid to say "
I don't know" and figure it out from there.  Good Luck, it's a lot of fun, just have to be smart about how you go about it.  Profit margin's are slim to start and takes a while to build a business unless you go work for someone else...no one was hiring where I am so went out on my own.

JW,  I am surprised that you would say that.  I think maybe its because you still have easy body movement.  With me,  the older stuff is the Direct Drive stuff, not the belt driven, K.   My body doesn't move as easy as yours, so I do prefer the newer stuff.  In my case and probably your case,  as you have put out your videos and I have watched you work at your place.  I have cut out a lot of in home service but will still go and do it.  If it gets to over whelming, I call up my son and hes comes and gets things back on current.  Most of my stuff now is done in the shop,  drop offs hey.   So I have 2 sisser tables that I can put a fridge on or a front loader on, and jack it up in the air to where I can just sit on my stool and access things if its a pump or motor control, or front seal or door switch etc.   But to say you would rather work on the old stuff, how old do you mean.   I would rather work on all the front loaders,  and matchine dryers.   I know this post was about the young lady that wasnts to get into doing appliance repair, good on her.   Most woman will find it much easy'r than most mean,  as they understand most of what we work on.   I go out of my way to talk ONLY to the lady, as the mocho man just doesn't shut up.  Woman know what is going on, and its much easier to diagnose it after speaking to them.   Anyway, JW, U have a good day hey.  Brent@CanBC   O0

Hi AJ,

Yes, I'm a technician.  Graduated with an ASEE a few years ago (1976).  Worked for many years in a lab testing motors and motor controls.  Went into sales for a few more years (30 or so).  A few years ago went back to my first love, fixing things.  I presently work for a local company in Northern Virginia repairing laundry products.  Don't know if I can add anything to your site.  Probably ask more than answer but you never know.

Just realized the initials of our "Professional Appliance Repair Trade" board spell out a word we use often in our line of work, P.A.R.T.

IMHO that's kind of cool.  8)

I'm the chief appliance tech for a retirement facility of 750+ residences. If you figure 6 or 7 appliances per residence that makes me lord and master of literally thousands of the little beggars. We are 100% GE and I do use GE factory service for in warranty repairs but after the first year they're all mine...So aside from not having to travel (the furthest I go is about a mile) and having to occasionally unclog a toilet or change a lamp ballast I am a appliance tech through and through.  :thanks:

Hi, I am a 35 year licensed refrigeration mechanic who has worked mostly on commercial refrigeration. For the last 7 years I have been self employed, semi retired and seem to get more and more calls to repair refrigerators and freezers.  I would like to get the pro status to find a little more information and help on the new technology out there with fridges.  IE: jazz boards, etc.  Working on supermarkets with computers was a breeze....had the info, and tech support.  This new stuff....hmm....hard to find info at time.

Thank You

Hi Erv,  my son works with me,  and he is well into the electronic age.   He uses his cell for everything that is out there, right in the customers home etc.  Codes you name it, its all on line and I know as he is showing me how to just use the cell or tablet, to get the information I need.  We also have all the manuals that AJ on this site has available,  good reliable information.

My son uses just his cell,  he pays 61.00 per month, unlimited everything,  and that is all he uses to get the information he needs. I am slowly getting used to mine, and it has everything available if you know how and what your are after.

You say you have been into Commercial Refrigeration for many years.  I also spent a good part of my life working on Ammonia and Freon plants etc.   Am in my 28 years doing domestic refrigeration in the Major Appliance section.   Only do drop offs at the shop now, my son does the inhome service.  Am 68 and am not to active from the waiste down,  old body is slowing down.  Above the waiste, still 20 years old.

You will learn a pile on AJ's site here, lots of information,  and a great bunch of techs here that are always willing to help.  Good luck Erv.

Hey Brent.....I hear ya bout the cell phone.  I just use plain ole talk on the phone cell....no smart phone.  Although I like the computer, just can't get into smart phone......screen too small......lol.

I used to work in Winnipeg, Mb. at Fleming Pedlar aka: Hussmann: aka Ingersol Rand, for 25 years.
Worked before that for 2 other small places for 4 years. I started in the trade in 1976.  Did grocery stores....rack systems, skating rinks, curling rinks, warehouses, vegetable storage, ice machines,a/c....etc.  Pretty much seen it all.  Touched a bit in Ammonia...but too smelly......lol.

Got tired of the big city...moved to country, and never looked back....much better way of life!

I hear you bout the bottom end not moving so good anymore.  My 55th bday..was just a couple weeks ago....you can feel the slowing down thing a bit.  Used to mountain bike....windsurf....etc.  Had some horses...I live in country on acreage.... but one died and didn't want to keep just one.  Fair bit of work baling hay.  The hardest part is picking 400 square bales.  You handle every bale at least 3 times....lol....so 1200 x 50lbs.....= sore back....and lots of muscle rub.....lol.
A good experience anyhow....the horses are good fun...real characters.  I truly do miss them!

Anyhow....I am sure from browsing on this site....and from what you have said, this will be a great place to find info.  I have managed pretty good so far...but any help is great.

And yes...I like the drop offs also.  None of this kneeling down and hauling half the truck into a kitchen!

Erv,  I will clairify my post so you really get my point.  In todays time, time is money,  and time can cost you plenty.   Having a cell that will do what ever for you, is priceless, plus it will save you mega time in a customers home. My son can go to Google, put in the make and code, and bingo.  So again,  having a vehicle versis walking or riding a bike in todays times, is a no brainer.  The vehicle has the tools, the parts, the ability to do the call now and quickly.

Having a cell that can get out you into a in-home service call, find out the make and what the call is if you didn't do it before when the call came in, then you can stand infront of the machine, and have your info in seconds.   Having to go back to the shop to look things up etc, take to much time, so it is costing you for not being up to date.

My son can look up the part to see if its in stock at the part suppliers, or its a special order, and how long its going to take, and the price.  We get paid for the service call now, plus if they want us to order the part, they pay that up front also.  In other words, you take care of your business or they will.   My suppliers want paid at the end of the month, if not, they hold all your orders till you do.  If you can't pay on the agreed time, then they don't want you for a wholesale customer.

I am in a population of 2700 in town, and 8000 in the area.  I have been doing just drop offs for over a year, as I am having issues with my bottom half and need a cane.  My son does all the in home calls,  and am in my 28th year now.  I will carry on in the shop, till I can't anymore, and my son will keep the business going.

My son also does computers, so he is busy.   Every thing he does is on his cell,  he uses that for every thing, plus.  Us older generation are finding this new stuff a stuggle,  since having my son come back and take over,  this stuff is nothing for him to figure out in a very short time.

For instance, we had a Frigidaire front loader in here, with a ddo code, but the information with it had nothing  that looked like that.  He pulled out his cell and in a minute or two, he said, Dad, its the dispenser door is open, ok.  So he pulled out the front main board, and took his meter and tested the switch, and nothing, so took out his screw driver (magnetic) and touched the switch and all the lights came on and all is fine.

So where was the magnet, who knows, couldn't even find where it fit on the dispenser. Cost for the magnet 23.00 plus frt, plus taxes, plus labour.

We put in a used dispenser with a magnet, and all works just fine.  As I said, he found the problem fast, right out front at the washer, and we tested it and run it through, and that takes much longer to test it, but if you don't test it,  you get to come back on your time.

You get into a home with these jazz boards, and have to reprogram them and they give you the wrong code, then with the cell you can get it and have that fridge up and running, and also they see what you are doing,  and we have no problem getting paid.  Mind you we do know who had money, and who doesn't.

Some of the tech here on Johns forum,  don't get paid after a call, until they get the parts and return.  We have found we have less problems if we charge and get paid up front for labour parts taxes, all of it.   We show the customer the problem, the cost, the availability of the parts, and the costs, all up front.  They like that.   So far its working for us just fine.

Erv,  you will struggle big time with out a cell with internet access. Very costly.   In todays times you must be able to diagnose the problem,  and have access to information now.  Going home and into a forum to get help takes to much time,  and time cost money.  Get a cell with every thing on it, unlimited 61.00 is what it cost my son.   Priceless Erv priceless.  ps  I just got a cell like my daughters, much bigger screen than my sons, but he likes his, and I like mine.  My opinion of cells is not the same as before, my son came home to run things.   My eyes and mind are wide open.

It will take me time Erv, but I am for it.   I could of retired 3 years ago, but what the hell would I do.  So am still doing what i can, and what I can't doesn't matter.  Theres a lot of things that don't matter anymore, right.  The best to you Erv, go get a fancy cell and things will just be in the past, but it will save you a lot of $$$$$ leaks that just the old standard cell will not even tough the one with everything on it.

A long winded post hey Erv, Brent@CanBC O0

I have looked to this forum as a "goto" place when I can't use tech support, via my contractors' tech support.

Our company is a two person operation, and is almost 2 yrs old. My background is from IT Networking and ElectroMechanical Controls for Commercial HVAC Systems, as a technician.  I left that world because of the brutal nature of big industrial Controls Contracting.

Appliance repair, believe it or not, is more fulfilling on a daily basis.  I, no longer have 10 bosses telling me what should be "top shelf" items.

AJ, I would pleased to join this group

Hello there AJ,

I am a veteran appliance tech with 25+ years of experience and come from a background in electrical engineering. I own and operate All Appliance Experts Inc. in sunny San Diego, CA. Currently I am a one man operation looking for honest, hard working and trustworthy techs to build my company as well as relieve some of the unbearable workload I currently have. I guess having too much work is never a bad thing, but as you can imagine very stressful! I hope to bring some valuable knowledge to other techs on the site.

I currently work on all major brands, makes and models. I specialize in sealed system repairs on refrigerators as well as everything else appliance related.

Cheers,

Mike

My unit is KSRS25ILQH01.  Just trying to get specs to determine resistance of temp sensors going to damper control so I don't order damper control for no reason...thank.  I found a thread that lead to the not working KAR 10 PDF but maybe that's not what I need?  I will try Google drive from PC later. Maybe phone or tablet, but other stuff works fine from same Google drive

Try this from drop box its the same manual. https://db.tt/Km0vDI1h (https://db.tt/Km0vDI1h)
You could put something in that damper vent like a pencil or something to keep the baffle open if it,s not opening to let the air from freezer get into refrigerator section. It might freeze something at some point.

Perfect...opened right up on phone NP.  Yup, I pulled it out to let the air flow but left electricslly connected to watch it...it is staying right at 40 so far!  The shitters never seem to open up unless I force manually...hey as long as we make it through Christmas dinner!  Usually its less than 40 outside, but we have a weird rainy 60 degree Christmas here on Cape Cod, which is the first one I ever remembered at 60!  Too bad its a northeaster with pouring rain

 Merry Christmas! :thanks:

Howdy, I'm Chris. I fixed appliances as a field technician for one of Whirlpool's most successful contractors for a few years. The hours were long, the customers were ridiculous and the appliances are getting cheaper. I specialized in Whirlpool's brands but did some other brands on the side. 90% of work was warranty. Before appliances I did TV repair for 7 years, quit around the time they started replacing LCD with LED and 4k screens. Thankfully I never did the grueling sales work at A&E, although it has been offered and turned down more than once. I did 9 to 12hr days with an average of 13calls/120miles driving. I will not go into detail who I worked for or how we did things in public. (Private is OK, just ask)

Certified through Whirlpool to work on any product they sell, certified universal with EPA (through esco), certified through PSA. (Still Graduate, didn't go for Master) I knew my regional service manager of Whirlpool on a first-name basis, still not sure how or why but he knew me too. I also took a 1,500 hour class on Appliance Repair.

Simply put, I'm looking to chat with other technicians, maybe learn something here or there.

I'm a UK based appliance engineer, started my own company about a year ago ( www.technicallysmart.co.uk (http://www.technicallysmart.co.uk) if you're interested :) ). I've been repairing all sorts of electronics and appliances for the past 5 years or so. Used to also working in the stage lighting trade but that's another story. Hoping I can be an asset to the team and look forward to helping out. Cheers!

Hello,
I am currently self employed, but have been seriously considering getting into the appliance repair trade.  Of course, I would keep my other work lined up, and offer the appliance repair as either an "add on", or a completely separate identity, all depending on how well this venture grows.   The reason why I have investigated this type of work is because we only have 2 companies that service our area, and one of those is Sears.   I can definitely see a need for appliance tech's, but getting over the hurdle of convincing a customer that it is better to repair, than replace constantly is my biggest concern............In any case, I would love to jump on the Forum where I can learn even more, and discuss some of my concerns.  Please add me to the list.

Thank you

Hey AJ,

I have used your site for years for help, mainly for service manuals, but I have also gotten good repair tips here also. I am a major appliance tech in Seattle. Here is a link to my Yelp page.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/richs-appliance-service-seattle

I could upload several tech sheets and service manuals, would the upgrade to P.A.R.T. allow me to do that? If so could you upgrade me?

Thanks,
Rich

Nope, sorry. Tried letting others upload manuals to our collection years ago, but the problem I run into is no one check to see what we already have before uploading. So we would end up with like a dozen whirlpool direct drive service manuals and such lol.

Feel free to email them to me. I have a program that I use that will check what is sent to me against what we already have on our google drive and marks the duplicates for me to remove.

Once duplicates are removed I go ahead and upload all the new ones.

Good morning AJ,
I am retired and spend most of my time on woodworking forums, yet family, friends, and neighbors knowing my appliance repair background (I missed out on the witness-protection relocation) always seem to catch me up with  'Can you take a look at this appliance?"

Some days I pine for the days before White Industries became Electrolux... back when a refrigerator was a box, compressor, and thermostat, and not an internet portal. I am not really a luddite, and even the esoteric internals of an Asko motherboard pique my curiosity (just not on a time-clock these days ;)

I'd likely just continue to lurk on your forum, but would like to stay abreast of the latest changes, - might even pipe up from time to time,
Thanks,
pgwisn

I would like to be considered for technician status and be able to use PART . I began working on appliances in 1975 after compleating the AC &  Refrigeration program at a local community college. My first job was at JC Penny. I stayed with them for 8 yrs until they got out of the appliance industry . I then was able to get on with Sears and worked with them for 13 yrs. Left Sears under good terms to start my own business and ran a one man operation for 10 yrs . Decided to go back to Sears and worked  another 8 yrs . At the present I'm at a state run facility maintaining about 325 appliances

Seems we have so many one post wonders asking to be upgraded to Technician and then never posting again.
Maybe we need to have a required minimum of 10 or 20 post before your able to have your account upgraded to Technician.

We could even down grade the current members with Technician status until the new required minimum post is ment.

What do you guys think?

Yeah you could do that but don't think it would help. To bad we can't put all the manuals in that section so there would be more tech information there. As I think they think there is more information there than there is. Know that would mean a more closed forum then so I don't know what the answer is to that

Hi

I am a refrigeration technician in mostly commercial in the past but am working with an appliance company doing residential  refrigerator work now. I need to learn more about Whirlpool and Samsung as they seem to be the brands most represented in homes I go into.  I have been the trade for 3 years. Technical school in HVAC repair. I worked in an office before switching careers and love being in the trades. Before I went to college and earned a BS in Business Administration  like everybody told me to do years ago and suffered in that environment for too long. The recession actually helped me find my way out!

Hi A.J., names Dustin out of Raleigh, NC. Working with a small company here that primarily deals with first year warranty for most major appliance manufacturers. By night I'll tinker with just about anything. Helped out on various forums in the past with factory tips they give us. Hope to chat with you guys soon.
