Title: Kenmore 70 (Gas) Won't Heat
Post by: Hambone on June 06, 2011, 07:18:11 PM
Got a problem. My 8-10 year old dryer went out yesterday. Worked fine on Saturday. No sign of prior problems. I searched the forum today and see a common problem is the Gas Valve Coils could be bad. I also see that an easy way to test this is if the Ignitor gets hot (glows) but dryer doesn't get hot this is most likely your problem.

My problem is mine is a front panel take off. So if I take it off I can't run the dryer and see if the ignitor glows. I took the back panel off but  can't see the ignitor from the back. Pretty sure I am missing something simple on how to check it.  Thanks!!

Remove the gas assembly and bench test it:
Attach a gas supply to the assembly. Power up the gas assembly. Touch the 2 wires that normally connect to the flame sensor so that all the components are energized.
Allow the ignitor to come up to full glow (around 3 minutes). Seperate the wires and watch for ignition. Be prepared to unplug the assembly. Do the test multiple times so you can allow the coils to heat up. After 6 trys if the gas coils die then you have it solved OR simply replace them puppys and party on. If the test turns out all is well then replace the flame sensor.

Your model number is missing three digits. Make sure you get the model number from the model/serial number tag that is located on the dryer.

I could not look your exact model dryer up without the full model number, but often there is a small hole in the front of the dryer, down towards the floor. It would be located in front of the burner and would have a plastic cap on it.

You can remove the small cap and then look through the hole so you can see the burner without having to remove the front of the dryer.

Thanks for the help. AJ the full model # is 11097573200   75732

I removed the front cap. Never even noticed it until you said that. Ran the dryer and didn't see anything glowing.

I believe you should see the ignitor glow before you hear the click of the gas valve come on.

You could remove the ignitor and ohm it out or see if you have voltage to it.

If you have voltage to the ignitor and it does not glow replace the ignitor.
If the ignitor checks open with a ohm meter replace the ignitor.

Thanks for your help. Does anyone have a link to a breakdown or can tell me where the Thermal Fuse is located. Looks like a simple pop out and replace. Is that correct?

It would be a good idea to check your dryer vent and blower housing for lint build up too.
