Title: GE Monogram Downdraft Vent
Post by: Pawzo on April 23, 2011, 03:03:05 PM
Hello,

My GE Monogram downdraft vent (model #ZVB36BH1BB (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=225193.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpartsearch%252Fmodel.aspx%253Fmodel_id%253D5212845)) stopped working....it won't lift or retract...it just makes a humming noise.  It was working fine up until I had to disconnect the switch that activates the downdraft.  When I went to reconnect it, the lead wire that connects the switch to the downdraft control box accidentally connected with the metal outlet box in my base cabinet and sparked....which must of shorted something out.  I've already replaced the lead wire (p/n WB18X10223 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=225193.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252FAppliance-Parts%252Fge-lead-wire-jumper-item-number-ap3203827.aspx%253Fpn_%253DWB18X10223)), but that didn't solve the problem.  I'm now thinking I need to replace the control board (p/n WB27X10704 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=225193.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252FAppliance-Parts%252Fge-control-board-item-number-ap3202875.aspx%253Fpn_%253DWB27X10704)).  Any recommendations?

did you reset the breaker?

Yes......even though the breaker never tripped, I did reset it and I unplugged the downdraft vent from the outlet.  When I plugged it back in and installed the new lead line, the downdraft made a humming noise....but wouldn't lift.  Now when I push the downdraft switch, there is no humming noise and nothing happens.  I've also checked to make sure that there is power to the switch (which there is) and the new lead line seems to be supplying power just fine.

Per your suggestion, I checked the control board....and sure enough....it had a burnt spot on it.  I assumed that was the problem and purchased a new one.  I just installed it and unfortunately I'm getting no response from the downdraft.  Before it would make a humming noise.  But now, it makes no noise at all.  I've check all of my connections with my voltage tester and electricity is flowing to the unit.  Any other suggestions about what might be the problem?  At this point, I'm thinking I may need to contact an appliance repair company to take a look at it....or just buy a new one.

Thanks for your help.

Is power going thru the switch?

Yes....I checked with my voltage tester and power is going to the switch.  Likewise, power seems to be running to the new control board.

Ohm the fan windings

Power appears to be going to the fan motor.....so I assume I must have shorted out the motor and it will need to be replaced.  What do you think?

Does the motor have a capacitor?

If it has the correct power and is not running I would say you are correct.
