Title: Kenmore Refrigerator not defrosting again.
Post by: Boatsrule on February 27, 2011, 06:42:57 PM
John,
Model # 596.71104101 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Parts?searchText=596.71104101&Search=Search)
A few months back you and I diagnosed that the defrost timer was bad. Ordered, thawed then replaced with  new timer and it worked fine until this last month. I ordered another, thawed it and replaced another thinking maybe it went bad already.  Well it took about two weeks and the back of the freezer has frosted up again and is blocking the cooling for the fridge.
Where should I look to diagnose what is wrong with it now.
Thanks for all you do

Rob

The defrost thermostat and defrost heater are your suspects.
Remove the interior back wall panel in the freezer to access the thermostat and heater.
Use your meter to ohm the thermostat and heater.
The thermostat must be cold to get a reading. It and the heater must be unwired for testing.

Please double check the model number. The model number you posted seems to be missing a digit.

Sears/Kenmore model number start with three digits then a period and then eight more digits. For example 123.12345678

Thanks for the quick reply! O0
I am out of steam for the day so I'll check into this tomorrow night and report back on my ohm findings.
Whopps the model number should have read 596.71104101 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Parts?searchText=596.71104101&Search=Search)

I have corrected your model number information for this topic, thanks!

I looked up your model number and your refrigerator defrost system only consist of three parts.

1. Defrost Thermostat, Part # 10442411 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Parts?s=t-10442411-%3d%3d)
2. Defrost Heater, Part # 10428409 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Parts?s=t-10428409-%3d%3d)
3. Defrost Timer, Part # R0131577 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Shop-For-Parts?s=t-R0131577-%3d%3d)

As jumptrout51 said I would suspect your defrost heater or the defrost thermostat.

I would check them with a ohm meter, but if you don't have a meter you can bypass the defrost thermostat by jumping it out. Then manually advance your defrost timer to the defrost cycle. Then wait and see if the defrost heater gets hot.

If the defrost heater gets hot then the heater is fine and you will need to replace the defrost thermostat.

If your defrost heater does not get hot with the defrost thermostat jumped out and the defrost timer advanced to the defrost cycle then chances are the defrost heater is bad and need to be replaced.

Warning: Only jump out or bypass the defrost thermostat for testing purposes. Do not leave the defrost thermostat jumped out. If you do it could cause a fire!

You may also be able to tell if the defrost thermostat is bad by just looking at it.

In the photo below the defrost thermostat on the left is bad. Notice how the top is popped up and out of place. This is just how I sometimes find them in the freezers.

Sorry I have not checked the problem yet have been working late and will try and get to it Wednesday. Thank God for a similar fridge in the basement.
Hang in I'll be back soon! :)

Go ahead and replace both the heater and thermostat while you are in there.
Why swap out one this month and next month have to go back in there?
Most Tech's replace both at the same time to prevent back calls.

Ok the heater checks out fine but the t-stat must be open I get no reading. Jumptrout you say the t-stat must be cold by that do you mean fridge cold or cold like I have had the fridge unplugged for 24hrs cold?

Yes,freezer cold.
Many close at 35 degrees.
If it is cold and does not read ohms it is bad.

It's room temp and does not read ohms. I could stick it in the snow then check it.

Put it in another ice box for a couple hours then quickly check it before it gets a chance to open. The most common terminator will close contacts (have continuity) at 25f They open (no continuity) at 50f. The job of the termination thermostat is to kill power to the heater element when the temp gets warm enough to melt frost off the coils. If the heater were to stay on for the entire 20 or so minutes of defrost it would not be pretty in there. It takes no time at all for the temp transition so you gotta be ready and check the terminator pretty fast.
By the way that is an Amana Bottom Mount ice box ain't it?

Ok I just took it out of the freezer after sitting in there all night. It now reads 00.1 ohms. Seems really low!

Get another one. If the heater is ok leave it be.
