Title: Whirlpool Gold refrigerator ice maker not working

Ok, I first reported this issue in a thread that was similar to my issue, but now my problem has evolved.
My water in the door works but my icemaker stopped making ice. The tray won’t fill. I replaced the inlet valve, still no ice.

I have not replaced the icemaker yet. Why? Because now my door ice dispenser stopped working. I was buying bagged ice (small soft pellets) and going to use ice trays until I could afford the new ice maker. It did dispense ice for a couple of weeks after the icemaker stopped working.  It still makes the noise of the motor turning, the gearing in the door turns and the little flap opens up to dispense the ice. However, none of the bucket mechanisms turn. I have taken it out and defrosted it to no avail. It’s like the gear in the door is not engaging the gear in the bottom of the ice bucket.
I was going to check the water lines (for frozen spots) and/or replace the icemaker but now I get the feeling I have bigger issues. I thought I would check in here before I went any further. Ideas?

Ok, I posted that and decided to check it one more time. I took the ice bucket out of the door and defrosted it one more time. Dried it, put it back in and it turns now. Odd. I guess its ok now. I still have no ice though. If I have replaced the water inlet valve, is the only thing left the ice maker itself?

Take a 3 inch piece of 14 gauge insulated wire and strip one inch of insulation off each end.
Bend the wire into a "U" shape.
Remove the front cover to the icemaker.
Carefully insert the bent wire into the holes marked "T" and "H".
Watch the plastic wheel on the end of the icemaker. It should start to turn.
If it turns, remove the jumper wire after a 1/4 turn of the wheel.
If it does not turn, replace the icemaker module.

I took the icemaker out. In the pic below you can see what I found. I took the white end cap off and there was a white “tab” like thing loose inside. The white gear you see was turning freely as it had come “out” and disengaged from the metal gear. When I turned it, nothing in the icemaker turned. I think this is my problem as one of the inside copper contacts on the backside of the white plastic gear has a burned mark on it as you can see it in the image. Replace it?

By the way, I jumped T and H and nothing happened. Also, the red light on the wall of the fridge is blinking twice and then pausing and then blinking twice again.

Get yourself a new icemaker.

I agree with jumptrout51 you need to replace the ice maker.

The factory part number for your ice maker is 2198597

Most online parts sites will cross that over to there own part number when you search for the factory number.

I looked at both of our affiliates part sites for your icemaker.

Repairclinic.com has it for $137.85 (http://www.repairclinic.com/Appliance-Parts?searchText=2198597&Search=Find%20Parts)

AppliancePartsPros.com has it for $120.98 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=93887.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpart_details.aspx%253Fpart_id%253D3182733%2526pn_%253D2198597).

Clean the burnt spot and party on.

Sorry JW, but I disagree. From looking at the photo the clip that holds the gear on has been damaged too. At this point I would replace the ice maker.

Is that the icemaker that mounts sideways into the freezer section with the optics?  Ice bucket on the door?

If it is.  You can go to lowe's, pick up a whirlpool icemaker kit, remove the head off of it, and install it onto your existing mold.  Lowe's sells 2 different kits.  One for a Frigidaire brand ref, and one for the Whirlpool brand machines.  You of course need the Whirlpool one.  They sell for $50 bucks plus tax.

Are the ones at Lowe's the same after market ice makers I see on ebay with the cheap white plastic ice tray?

I ordered one of them cheap after market ones off of ebay cheap and it turned out to be a piece of junk. Two months later I was back there to replace it again.

remove the head off of it, and install it onto your existing mold.

Not to be a stick in the mud, but I think this would also void any warranty on the new ice maker.

Hey guys. This thread has been super helpful. I have the same issue with the white clip breaking off on the control head. I'm thinking of trying to pick up one at Lowes as previously mentioned.

However, my question is, if I decide to purchase a new one online, do I have to get the whole Icemaker, ie; Part # 2198597 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=93887.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpart_details.aspx%253Fpart_id%253D3182733%2526pn_%253D2198597) for $121.00

or can I just replace the control head ie; Part #628135 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=93887.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fpart_details.aspx%253Fpart_id%253D4359694%2526pn_%253D628135) for $57.00

I really appreciate your time and help

Thanks.

If the white clip is the only thing broken, thats all you will need to change.  So go on ahead an order just the head.

Hey guys, its been awhile but I finally got a working icemaker. A friend had one that he bought for his 2nd fridge but never used it. The problem is it has the metal on off bar installed. How do I remove that?

Also, the water inlet cup on the end (the white cup looking thing that the water pours into), I need to put that on from my icemaker because the one he has had the knockout removed so it might leak water with my setup.
