Title: Repair Guide: Whirlpool Direct Drive Washer - No agitate or spin
Post by: AJ on July 07, 2007, 07:43:53 AM
Whirlpool Washer: All direct drive models

Customer complaint: The washer is making a noise when it should be agitating or spinning, but it does not wash or spin the cloths. There is also water sitting in the tub.

Solution to the problem: Replace the motor coupling

The motor coupler connects the washers main motor to the gear box. There is no belt on a direct drive washing machine.

Sometimes the washer will make a lot of noise if the coupler is broken and the washer is trying to agitate or spin. Other times it does not make much noise at all and the only thing you will hear is the motor running. It all just depends on if parts of the broken motor coupler are hitting each other when the washer is running or if all the pieces of the broken motor coupler have fallen to the floor under the washer.

The washer will still be able to pump the water out. A lot of the times the customer will say it's full of water and does not pump out, but it does. They just don't give the washer time to pump the water out before they shut the washer off because of the funny noise it is making.

The washer will drain the water out even if the motor coupler is broken.

This is a very simple and cheap repair if you do it yourself.

Great guide and this is just what I found wrong with my washer.
It was very easy to take the washer apart and check the motor coupler after reading your guide. If I would not have read you guide first I may have tried to take the back of the washer off first, lol...

Now were can I get a motor coupler?
Do you sell them?

Thanks!!  :)

Hi,

I wanted to say thanks for step by step guide. We live out in the middle of nowhere and have 5 kids. It cost us $100 just to get a repair man to come out here.

I ordered the part using the link at the bottom of the repair guide and have the part in just a couple day's.

The washer is working great again and you saved us some big bucks!

Thanks a million.....

Here is a video I found that shows you what a washer can sound like if it has a bad coupler.

This is what they sound like if the coupler is cracked in the middle.
If the coupler has fallen all the way off it won't make as much noise as this one does.
