Title: Amana Dryer heating only on low
Post by: Jaytag on January 22, 2009, 04:24:30 PM
Dryer does not fully dry on auto dry when on regular heat.  Timed heat used to work on regular heat.  Now it takes much longer to dry and does not get fully hot on Timed regular heat.  My heat choices are reg/perm press, no heat and delicate.

If it was your heating element then you would have no heat at all. You probably need to clean out the vent and clean the lint out the dryer.

I have gone through and cleaned everything out.  Do you think it may be a sensor?

Take the exhaust off the back, Run 1 load, if it works fine it is in the exhaust. If not it's in the dryer. Simple way to find out.

If your dryer components are fine you may want to think about a new 30 amp circuit breaker.

Check the cord ends,in case you have a loose connection at the wall or dryer. Poor contact will cut your heat off prematurely.

On that Amana, alot of people forget to clean the blower exhaust.  You have to take the front off, and then the two 5/16s screws on each side, and then remove the whole blower housing from the drum.  If iot is not full of lint replace the thermostat on the blower housing.    Tom  www.applianceeducator.com

it runs the same without exhaust which is clear.  I have another dryer that I ran on the circuit no issues.  The problem is within the dryer something that controls the temp with the element.  Anyone have a manual to repair this particular dryer?  PDF?

No manual but any dryer has a control thermostat mounted whee it can judge drum temp. And that is the blower housing. All other thermostats on the heater housing have to do with hi limit. Clean out the dryer, check the blower wheel for looseness, and clear the outside vent. It is as simple as that.

One other itty bitty tiny winy more thing.
The contacts in the timer become dirty from the arcing associated from the heater control thermostat constantly judging the drum temp. As a result this sometimes can cause the dryer to take fifty forevers to dry the clothes. Solution: remove the timer. take the timer apart carefully, file down the burnt contact where the high temp heater wire connects to the timer. Tricky I know but hay, I have had success in the past.

I will agree with you. Why have you not replaced the thermostat on blower housing?  It tells the element what to do. The element is stupid, it know's nothing!!!  It just know to do what it is told. Sort of like me, and my wife.  LOL!!!  If you get some heat, we know the element is good, so the only thing that tell the element what to do is the operating thermostat which is located on the blower housing, or the high limit thermostat, which is mounted on the heating element, which will only come into play, when the vent is clogged, and you made multiple points, that the vent is clear.  I would proceed in that direction.    Tom  www.applianceeducator.com

Remove and examine your heater. It may have broken and is shorted against the housing. That would allow some heat, but not enough to dry in a timely manner.
