Title: GE Washer loud racheting noise
Post by: kwcbiker on October 05, 2015, 06:36:29 PM
My GE washer WWSE5240G2WW makes a very loud racheting noise in the agitation mode as well as the spin cycle. The outer tub appears to lock out correctly when agitating. Washer seems to be washing fine, but noise has been there a while and recently getting very loud. Any ideas, is this a bad shaft and agitator assembly that needs replacing, or other thoughts? Thanks.

Look at the electronics on the top of the motor. There's either a tiny green or a big bright red LED. If it's flashing four times your problem is a dead mode shifter. More info inside the control panel in Mini Manual.

I think the mode shifter is working. The drum does not spin when in agitation mode. I I had checked the light already and it is blinking regularly every 1 second. I did remove the belt, ran the motor and it is quiet. Hand turn the drum and it is quiet. Replaced the belt, placed a piece of tape on the motor shaft and slowly hand turn the drum and there is a squeaking that corresponds to every motor rotation. As I turn the drum faster it becomes a clicking, again that corresponds to every motor rotation. There does seem to be a little play in the motor shaft. Is it possible that bad bearing in the motor could be making this racheting noise as the motor reverses during agitation?
