Title: Whirlpool icemaker floods freezer
Post by: adstocksdale on September 07, 2008, 04:01:11 AM
Icemaker Problem: The water to my Whirlpool icemaker will not shut off properly and overfills the trays causing a "flood" in the freezer.  Do you have any idea what could be my issue?

I can tell you exactly what is happening. The main drive wheel on your ice maker has a small copper plate mounted behind it. This plate makes contact with  the printed circuit board and energizes the water valve for 7 and ahalf seconds. Over time the copper plate will actually stick causing excessive water overfilling and flooding the ice maker mold. You probably need a new icemaker. But try and carefully remove that main drive gear(The one that has do not rotate manually printed on it) and clean the copper plate. Put the gear back and see what happens. To bypass the thermostat and iniate a harvest cycle to see how much water comes out you must put a jumper between T and H. Listen for a Click and remove the jumper. Let the wheel go all the way around and count how many seconds water comes in . It should be 7.5 seconds. This will happen very near the end of the cycle so be patient.

Mr. Webster:

Thank you for the advice. Could you please advise what a "jumper" is?  I am not familiar with that term as it relates to my icemaker problem. I will let you know if it works. Thanks

Hi,

Unless you had to turn the water off to the refrigerator to get the ice maker to stop filling I would go ahead and replace the ice maker.

If you had to turn the water to the refrigerator off to keep it from flooding then you may have a bad water valve.

If you have some romex wire laying around you can make a perfect jumper. Just form a small horseshoe  and have both ends skinned back so you can jump between T and H.

Thats what I am talking about: Excellent picture. You jump out the ice maker (as shown by our illustrious potentate  Whirlpool Tech) just for a few seconds to get her a goin and then listen for the watervalve to kick in and count the seconds. Should be 7.5 secs.
