Title: Dependable care 2 belt maytag washer won't spin
Post by: JWWebster on May 18, 2013, 11:12:56 AM
My neighbor has an old dependable care that will not spin. We have removed the brake package. The bearing looks good. Will simply replacing the brake package fix it or does anybody know a trick?

What is the model number? Rotating the drive pulley clockwise by hand should cause the pulley to "climb" the transmission input shaft pushing the thrust bearing against and releasing the brake while at the same time pulling down on the transmission input shaft engaging the clutch inside the transmission so that now, the pulley, brake rotor and transmission rotate in unison. Could be that the brake is stuck or the clutch in the transmission is not engaging due to a problem with the input pinion gear (possible sheared holding pin). Could also be belt slipping due to motor base carriage assembly not working properly.

Usually the center seal and bearing. Center seal leaks and lets water down into the bearing.

Does the motor reverse?
Is the pump good?
If so,I agree with oldstoveguy.

Well,  since I've been working on these before some of you were born,   I look for what I call the "ring of death" of the bearings.   If you notice a line of darkness showing when you take off front even with bottom of tub,  you need a seal kit and bearing.    Also,  check for a sock or something rolled up inbetween outer tub and inner tub.    Usually,  brake and lower bearings are far down the list on probability.    Look at motor,  and ensure rollers are free and motor is springing back and forth.   Check belts for wear.    Also,  could be a siezed or near siezed pump.     will cause not to spin

I don't know if he fixed it or not but the washer is not out in the yard. I sent him down the road to the Maytag guy who has a warehouse behind an appliance store near here. These washers so rarely break down when I do see one it is a doosey to repair so I avoid em.

I would rather work on a Dependable Maytag than any other washer. They are much easier to work on .
