Title: Kenmore Dryer 86663100 noisy
Post by: Trung on May 09, 2013, 12:38:23 PM
I just bought a house and it has a Kenmore Dryer model # 86663100. It is very noisy when it runs.  Any idea  why that may be and how to fix it? Thank you.

It's 110.86663100. Usually it's a drum roller, 349241T, or idler pulley, 691366. You might consider getting the maintenance kit, 4392065, which includes the idler, rollers and belt.

I always use the kit on those. Part number 4392065 (http://www.repairclinic.com/PartDetail/Maintenance-Kit/4392065/587636).

The model is 110.  Thank you very much for your guidance.  Is there already some instruction on this site on how to check what is wrong that causes the noise and how to make the replacement?  It would be very helpful if you can take me there. Thank you again!

As for checking it you will need to open up the dryer and take a look at the support rollers. Give them a spin with your hand and you should be able to tell if they are bad or not.

I opened and checked the dryer.  The video is very helpful and I had no problem opening it. The idler and roller seems ok. Frankly I don't know how to tell if they are bad or not.  The idler looks normal.  I spin the roller and it works.  The drum belt looks old and has a lot of crack on the inner side.

There is a cushion around the round front opening that looks old and its thickness is not even. The upper part of the cushion (about half, i.e. the upper part, of the circle) is almost more than twice thicker than the lower part of the cushion.

What do you think is the problem for the noise?  Is it the belt or the cushion?

Thank you.

You could have something in the blower wheel. We're the lint filter is. Sometimes things fall down there when filter is out.

Thank you.  I'll check that as well. But you don't think it is the cracked bell or the cushion that may be the problem?

Mine had one of them bra underwires rubbing the fan. Here is a pictorial:

It is very noisy when it runs.

Could you describe the noise for us?
Is it a thumping noise, rattle or grinding noise?

Could you post a video of it on youtube so we could hear the noise it's making?

If the drum support rollers or belt idler are bad they would be noisy when you spin them by hand and/or have a lot of play in them on the shaft.

If a chunk of the belt is missing it may make a thumping noise, but I don't see to many belts that do that.

If the felt seal is bad enough is can cause a lot of noise because the metal drum will be rubbing on the metal of the dryer.

It sounds like a training is running. I will check the blower wheel. I don't think it is metal against metal though.

Could very well be something in the blower then.

If there is a lot of lint build up stuck to the blower wheel it will throw it off balance causing it to make a lot of noise.

I checked the blower wheel and it looks fine.  There were no lint in the compartment.  There were two small metal pieces outside the blower wheel compartment where the connection with the tube is (the tube that leads the air to outside the house).  The two small metal pieces are sections of a pull tab of a zipper.

I also realized that both the front and back tri-rings of the left support roller were broken. It looks like that it needs replacement.  Do you think this is the cause of the noise?

Many thanks.

Probably so, do the wheel turn free?

No it does not.  I'll replace the support rollers, the belt, and clean up the blower wheel compartment. Will see if this works. Thank you.

I changed everything using the maintenance kit, cleaned the blower wheel compartment, and it works like charm.  No more loud noises and if running without a load, it is really minimal noise, very smooth.  Thank you all for your help.

May I ask where to buy the spring for the front door of the dryer?  One of the two broke and I need to replace it.  Thank you.
