Title: maytag sav3655aw wont drain
Post by: jeffpope0 on April 25, 2013, 08:26:12 AM
I have a maytag sav3655aw washer. The unit will not drain on the rinse cycle unless the lid is lifted and closed durning the cycle. I replaced the lid switch but that was not the problem. Any ideas?

These washers have to reverse the motor to achieve drain and spin. There is a pause built into the timer because the motor has to stop before going the other direction. I suspect you timer is not doing this and you are providing that pause when you lift the lid.

Thanks for the fast reply! Do you think its worth replacing the timer? Or is it time to shop for a new washer?

This is an Amana design, not a direct drive design.  There is no pause, the motor reverses to spin and drain.  If the motor is running but not draining, you may have a coin in the drain that's acting like a check valve. If the motor is not running, rather than lifting the lid, try jiggling the timer knob. 27001113 (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=omv7WULuxaw&subid=0&offerid=225193.1&type=10&tmpid=2111&RD_PARM0=http%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros.com%252Fwhirlpool-cntrl-elec-27001113-ap4036066.html&RD_PARM1=http&RD_PARM2=%253A%252F%252Fwww.appliancepartspros&RD_PARM3=.com%252Fwhirlpool-cntrl-elec-27001113-ap4036066.html)

The motor cannot reverse direction unless it stops first. There must be a pause.

Crap, I should read before replying. I've never seen one of these fail to pause but have seen it happen to many of the direct drives.

As far as repair versus replace, I would lean toward repair, just because there don't seem to be any good new toploaders available anymore.

Retail price is around $140 for the timer. I think it would be OK to repair. Not my favorite toploader but can't think of anything better being built today.
